Wait a minute. Wait just a cotton-pickin’ moment. You mean to tell me that you guys:

a. had ten people
b. knocked the Black Widow and her sidekick out early
c. gave Yeti a bit of a comeuppance
d. didn’t let Nanook get bossy with his stack
e. and OMD WON???

I believe I just missed the best Doper poker game EVAR!!!111!!

a. Yep!
b. Yep!!
c. Yep!!!11111OMG!
d. He tried, last I heard he was moaning something like, “Can you beat a J? Duck, you f’r!”
e. Yep, he had a massive stack towards the end. Squashed us like so many bugs.

:dubious:

Sorry MissT, I couldn’t think of another flashy name. I apolgize for the sidekick remark. What’s your poker persona?

The Poker Medusa. One look in her eyes will draw you into a deadly stone cold bluff.
The Siren. Her sweet table demeanor enchants men, bringing them ever nearer to doom.
Wonder Woman. Beware the lasso of truth (and shiny gold push-up halter top) if you’re going to try and bluff her.

And yeah Capn I’m as shocked as you that I could actually play well and take the game against some very strong competition, but keep it quiet. I don’t want Gangster Octopus to realize I’m a fraud quite yet.

Oh, I’m a fraud also, so there is nothing to worry about. When you called me with your pocket fives, considering the community cards, that was a damn good call, not the sign of a fraud.

OMD what I meant to say was congrats. It’s been a long time since you’ve gotten any cards whatsoever.

I’m leaning toward calling MissTake the Poker Siren. I like it a lot.

Congats to Only Mostly Dead for coming in first place last night at a full table!

This quarter’s rankings so far:

  1. Duke of Rat 78.17%
  2. Yeticus Rex 70.29%
  3. Only Mostly Dead 68.1%
  4. Nanook of the North Shore 62.88%
  5. Aholibah 53.5%
  6. Miss Take 50.31%
  7. x-ray vision 10.54% (stop laughing!)

Damn good only because I was reckless enough to believe you didn’t have a third J to match the two from the flop. That could have easily gone the other way. I just looked at the hand history. 5s were lower than any table cards (the pair J, 7 on the flop, 9 turn) until the river 4, by which time we were both already committed to see it to the end. I played dangerously, and got a break. Total hack  In retrospect, I’m appalled that I went all in by the turn on pair 5.

(Game 1004221708 if you want to look it up)

Hey, what about Duke’s comeuppance?!?!

Eh, I guess that’ll be next week.

Heh, I was way happy to eek out 2nd place. $.35 ain’t nothing to sneeze at, pal!

Stretching my lead over the pack is just gravy, baybee!!

And , and, and I even got to live up to MY poker persona
You will tremble at the mention of my name ! The Duck of Death…errr Suck!

I wonder if Nanook has recovered yet?? Apoplexy is a serious condition.

A freaking full house. On the river. Bastard. River sucking mf’ing bastard.

I guess I deserved after I slow-played those four jacks.

It would appear not

So, in the news tonight: PartyPoker is beta-testing shootout tournaments, as of this past weekend. I really like the format, so I’ve played in five of them. First two, went out in the first round on the bubble – v. frustrating. Second two, made it into the second round and crapped out, at least making my buy-in back with a little extra. And I DO mean a little.

Fifth one…I win. The whole fucking shooting match, boys (and Miss). $371 in profit, baybeeeeeeee.

FEAR THE BLACK WIDOW.

“All shall see me, and DESPAIR.”

Awesome. Simply awesome. I sit in fear of the BW!

You have a linky to what exactly a shootout tournament is?

Basically, a shootout works like a SNG for the first few rounds, then like a regular MTT for the last round. To advance from the first round you have to finish in the top three of your ten-player table for that round. Same for the second and the third rounds. Then the fourth round is played out like a MTT. The number of finishers who qualify for money in the final round depends on how many entered. But finishing each round in the top three at least gets you some money for that round. So more people get paid off, but each person who gets paid gets less money than could be expected in a regular MTT. The basics for PartyPoker’s shootouts can be found here.

There were about 1670 players entered in the tournament I won (which had a $5 buy-in), and you can use the calculator at the link above to see what the structure and payouts looked like for each round. (I finished second at my table in each of the first three rounds.)

I’m happy you won, Aholibah, but…

A tournament with a $8,350 prize pool, and the winner gets $371.

So something like 50% of the money is paid in the first round, 25% in the second, 15% in the third, and only 10% in the final round.

I like the idea of having the top three of each table advance, but I don’t think that making it past the first table merits a payout of 50% of the prize pool.

Does this format promote reckless play, especially in the first round?

Do tournaments really need to be shorter? I figure you get more play time for your money, but if you’re looking at is getting paid a per hour wage, I suppose faster would be better.
