The SDMB's resident experts

I’m pretty well set, since I know who the resident experts are around here in the fields of medicine, law, ornithology, and coal power plants. If I need to alert them by e-mail about a question that isn’t being answered, I can. But what about newbies and not-so-newbies? For example, Eve (coming up on 2000 posts now) didn’t know until recently if we had any physicians on board. That’s not her fault. There’s no easy way to tell. KarlGauss lists “physician” under occupation on his profile, but there’s no way to search the profiles for “physician.” Or is there? Apparently the members function actually worked for a little while (hence Get your most active posters here). Since I was on vacation then, I don’t know how it worked. I have no idea why it was disabled again.

Is there any way I could (for future reference) find someone who lists under occupation (say) “professional vagrant.”

As far as I know, vBulletin does not offer any way to search the member profiles.

You could go post an enhancement request at the vBulletin forum,

Well, if we’re going to compile a list of experts (which I think is a great idea) then I want you all to know that you can ask me any Pokémon questions you have.

Here’s your professional vagrant. CKDextHavn, occupation - wealthy young man-about-town.

I’m your resident expert on anything Zev related

I am, so far as I can see, the board’s only self-proclaimed charlatan.

It is a heavy responsibility…

(Trying out my new .sig here)

I think you could . . . but we disabled the Member database, for two reasons:

  1. Security. As nice as it would be to offer our forum members a list of all our folks, it would also be offered for scammers and multi-level marketers and other scum to page through. No way.

  2. The member database is searchable and performing those searches takes up a large amount of system resources. We felt it was a more appropriate to allocate these resources to the regular operation of the board. Extras are nice, but they are extras and y’all are happier when the board works quickly. That’s more important than anything else.

That explains things, TubaDiva. Thanks.
