The Search in Thread feature is gone

I use search in Thread Games every day. It’s useful to confirm my answer word hasn’t been used recently.

Now the magnifying glass is taking me to the Top Level board search.

I have to press the three lines button to get the normal search. But the search in current thread check box is missing.

I looked under advanced and search in current thread isn’t there either.

It’s still there for me. On my screen, if I click on the magnifying glass, “In this topic” appears under the search bar. If I go to Thread Games and click on the magnifying glass, “In Thread Games” appears under the search bar.

What type of device, browser, etc. are you using? And what theme are you using?

I use my Android phone.

I use the default theme. I don’t know where to find my theme in discourse

I’ve never customized my discourse account.

I’ll log out and sign in. See if that does anything.

That didn’t work. I even closed all Tabs and restarted the Duck Duck Go browser.

To determine or change Theme:

  • Click on your Avatar next to the Menu. (Upper Right Corner)
  • Select Profile (The last symbol on the right)
  • Select Preferences again :gear: (The gear symbol)
  • Click on Interface. (Should be the second to last choice.)

Straight Dope Light is my Theme

Default home page is Categories

I just switched to Discourse Lite and the In This Topic shows on Chrome in Windows 11.

I’ll check my Android now:
It comes up, once I start typing in the search window.

Well that’s the least intuitive ux element I’ve seen in a while.

Your at the Top level search with the 3 lines button?

I got a option there after I started typing.

If I press the three lines button (whatever its called). I don’t get the in topic.

I can use the search now. But something has changed.

It was more intuitive with a check mark box.

On my phone, while in the thread, I click the search button and once I start typing the In This Topic showed.

In Windows it worked normally, just an option in the thread search.

Please note: I’m not defending this change, it does seem ill-advised and less functional than the non-mobile version. This was just trouble-shooting

Here’s what I found:

I use Android 15 on a Pixel 7 Pro. I’m using Firefox 137.0. I use Straight Dope Dark theme.

When I’m in a thread and I poke the magnifying glass icon, I get:

A one-line search bar with a “control sliders” button on the end. Using that one-line search bar does a full-site search, not a thread search.

If I poke the “control sliders” button I get the full-fat search UI (like using the search button from the Categories list), which allows me to optionally force a topic-only search, but that’s not a default.

I don’t know if any of this represents a change, but I can tell that doing a topic-only search is not a one-click operation.

I appreciate the help.

I didn’t realize the Discourse custom sdmb features could change. Unless the admins approved.

I know a lot of work went into making the board look and work similar to Vbulletin.

The board is working so much better on Discourse.

@gnoitall
How are you forcing a current topic search? I can’t find it under Advanced.

Once you start typing something to search for the “in this topic” option appears.

I almost exclusively use my Pixel 4A Android 13 phone for using the dope. This is how it looks for me before and after I start typing in the search box:

Now that I look at it more closely, I don’t actually see the option I was expecting to do a topic-only search. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

@EllisDee seems to have found it, but it’s not the way I remember doing it before.

It definitely changed, and very recently. I used the checkbox that @aceplace57 describes as recently as this past weekend and now it’s gone.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Discourse devs removed it because they considered it redundant with the other way of forcing a topic search. (And that other way is actually sorta convenient if you recognize it as it’s being offered.)

Same here.

They had an update yesterday, as of this posting, it was 21 hours ago.

A few things have changed and it looks like a new but not yet working feature was added.

“Search in Topic” shows up on my PC (Chrome) but not my iPad (Chrome).

The change is only on mobile. Your IPad could be configured either way. But as long as it’s claiming to be a mobile device it gets the new way.

Again, the “search in thread” feature wasn’t removed. It was just slightly disguised. The first time you see it in the new spot you’ll never wonder again where it’s hiding.

I’m mot a big fan of the change. But it’s a trivial thing to adapt to and will seem obvious 3 days from now.

It’s good to know how the current topic Search works after the update.

Thanks @engineer_comp_geek @LSLGuy and everyone else that got this resolved.
