I kinda got the impression that **BeerGeek ** was trying to suggest that Ellis Dee was secretly going to bet ON the Steelers.
That would be the smart money, but Ellis is a hardcore New York fan, so I think he was serious. I figured if he wanted to place a side bet on this week’s game since he thinks the Jets should be favored (!) I would oblige him.
J - E - T - S ! Jets Jets Jets~
It is to laugh.
Shall I lay the smack down on our newest Jets fan by reminding him of the loss they took at the hands of the soon-to-be World Champion Steelers about a month ago? Should I remind him that the team will be in about as tip-top shape as they’ve been in all season? Should I remind him that they spanked the Billlls with their third-string, the same Buffalo team that won 6 in a row until their hopes were dashed by Pittsburgh’s scrubs, the same team that lost by 2 early on in the season to the Jets and then beat them by 5 later in the season?
Nah, I’ll just let him have his delusions. I just don’t want to hear any crying after they lose.
I have to agree with your Airman. I think the Steelers are the surest pick of the weekend. Enjoy the Steelers last win of the season!
Nice to see that catching on.
Yeah, I think that one’s a keeper. I laughed like hell when I saw that and I decided that I just had to use it.
Airman, please, I want nothing more than a Steelers Super Bowl win. Please don’t jinx it.
They went 15-1 with me talking smack since August. I dare say that a few more weeks won’t matter as far as a “jinx” goes. I think that this thread disproves any “jinx” on the Steelers.
Howyadoin,
This is just damn classy…
Roethlisberger donates first NFL playoff paycheck to tsunami victims
Something to think about while we’re all denigrating each other’s parentage, eh?

Oops – didn’t mean to just repeat the link before my post. I meant to paste it somewhere else.
Mr. Moto, where is everyone in the pic? I mean, Black and Gold Brigade units are usually a little bigger than that!
Maybe it’s due to one of Kerry’s defense budget slashes.
Airman, you are definitely correct in that The Chad played his worst game of the season against the Steel Curtain. However, Big Ben played his worst game of the season against Gang Green.
In my (delusional, granted) mind, the game is a pick 'em. Both teams have been ravaged by the flu; Joey porter, Kendrell Bell, and The Chad all missed practice on Wednesday due to the flu, and as an added bonus Quincy Carter may not even join the team, as he’s with his ailing mother this week, and Herm has said (late Wednesday) that Brooks (Bollinger) will likely be #2 and Ricky Ray will be #3, despite Ricky taking most of the snaps at practice. As an aside, Herm mentioned that he told Ricky he guessed they were at a waffle house, because Ricky kept “serving them up”, throwing multiple picks in practice.
Where a fan of fainter heart might find this worrisome, I am of stronger stock. I believe this shows the excellence of the Jets’ secondary at catching, and should translate into at least one – possibly two – picks on Saturday.
The pessimist in me finds the overtime game last week distressing, as it has been shown that teams going to overtime have a rough time the following week, but that is a regular season trend, and I’m hoping it doesn’t cross over to the playoffs.
It’s a perfect matchup for the Steelers, though. Look at it as a conversation between two rival fans, from the Jets perspective, and it gets pretty grim:
NYJ: We have the league’s leading rusher!
Pitt: We are ranked #2 in rushing to your #3.
NYJ: So what, we’re ranked #5 against the run!
Pitt: We’re #1 against the run.
NYJ: Well, we’re #7 in total defense, how about you?
Pitt: Also #1.
NYJ: Yeah, well we have Pennington!
Pitt: Roethlisberger is 13-0 lifetime in the NFL.
NYJ: But now that we have McCareins, our receivers are solid.
Pitt: Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress, Antwan Randle El.
NYJ: Well, we have Moss returning kicks!
Pitt: Antwan Randle El.
NYJ: You smell bad!
I did discover a couple interesting tidbits in researching this little dialogue. The Giants were in the top ten in passing defense, which stunned me. More relevant, the Steelers don’t even have 3000 yards passing. The Jets had their fair share of problems at QB this season, so the passing is looking rather pathetic on both teams. Jets are ranked #22 to the Steelers #28. Neither team averaged even 200 yards per game. (190 for the Jets, 170 for the Steelers.)
So I guess we can all expect another two hour game. If the Jets can avoid all the penalties, which was an aberation during the first meeting, it should be a close one. Too close to call, IMO. If the spread is 9, the Jets are a mortal lock to cover. Bet the kids’ college fund on Gang Green.
J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!
Airman, I propose a gentlemen’s bet this week. Straight up, no spread. If the Steelers win, I will do (or refrain from doing) whatever you suggest here on the Straight Dope. One possibility might be no disparaging remarks about any Steelers, including the team (and franchise) as a whole, in the entire calendar year of 2005.
If the Jets win outright, however, then next year you must name this thread “The Third Annual Jets March To The Superbowl Thread.” Whaddya say?
Well, I’ve been hanging my dick out all season waiting to have it cut off, I guess it’s too late to stop now.
You’re on. I’ll think of an appropriate punishment later, after the win.
[farcical rabid fan mode]
Cheap bastard. Waits until he gets a measly playoff check to donate something. The star (quarterback/running back/wide receiver) from my favorite team, the (Giants/Ravens/Colts/Saints) would have donated a true game check. Clearly, Roethlisberger hates tsunami victims.

They just said that Abraham was still suffering from his vaginaitis. Gotta protect your free agency status, dontcha know…
I think you were wrong on that one, good buddy. Pro Bowl, spectacular defense, and now a pick on Pennington.
Oops, gotta go. The Bus just took it to the 3 yard line. I can’t miss the touchdown.
