The Second Mitt Romney Memorial Massachusetts Special Election

Today is the Massachusetts special senatorial election to replace John Kerry, and after the multitude of threads spawned by Scott Brown’s victory 3 years ago, it seemed fitting to start a thread on this one.

Clearly having learned their lesson, the Democratic party nominated someone with actual experience in campaigning. Even though Markey’s been criticized for being wooden and uninspiring, he hasn’t made any of the multiple missteps Coakley did (Curt Schilling a Yankees fan Martha?). The Republican party nominated Gabriel Gomez, a former Navy Seal with no political experience whatsoever. I don’t know what kind of car he drives either. All the polls, and Nate Silver, indicate Markey will win handily.

This one is no contest. Markey walks to victory. The Scott Brown win was an aberration and won’t be repeated. A Gomez victory is a little less likely than Chris Christie getting a gig modeling Speedos.

It certainly seems that way. Gomez had the potential to be an interesting candidate but for all his talk of being independent he seems like a mainline Republican.

There will always be a chance for a liberal Republican to make a good run in MA, we had a run of governors as well. All it requires is a good R candidate and a mediocre D candidate (and there are plenty of them).

But… do any liberal Republicans exist? One time this great species roamed the northeast in numbers, but have been driven to the brink of extinction by the Great Right Wing hunters.

And Markey holds the seat for the Democrats. Looks like it’ll be about 55-45.

" Zuh goggles! Zey do nuzing! My eyes!"

Yes, it was a comfortable win, but certainly not a landslide. I sometimes think people have this image of Mass elections as all being 70-30 blowouts. The state is solidly (D), but not so much that a (R) will always lose. Just look at the Governorship over the past 25 years.

And now Markey can start fundraising for his next run in 18 months. :smack:

WHERE IS THE BRAIN BLEACH?! Dear god why?!
