In Stanley Kubrick’s version of Stephen King’s “The Shining”, there is a scene at the end of the movie where the poor wife is running around seeing all these bizarre scenes in the hotel. One of the rooms that she happens upon has two men in it and one is wearing a bear suit, the other is sitting on the bed, and I am not quite sure what they are doing. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew why this was in the movie, because it doesn’t really make sense with the story line.
thank you!

Here’s the scene. I have to say it looks quite obvious to me what’s going on, but I could be imagining that. As for what this is supposed to mean, I have no idea.
If I recall correctly (it’s been awhile since I’ve read the book), the book contains more back story than the movie portrays. The 2 characters that the wife encounters were former owners, guests, or servants at the hotel who were intimate with each other, although it was suggested that it was sort of a lop-sided (unrequitted) arrangement. Being that they were encountered by the wife as ghosts, I’m sure they met their fate, but I don’t remember how. Hopefully, someone else here can tell you more…I don’t even see the book here in my collection, now.
From what I remember, I think the above picture had something to do with a masquerade party at the hotel.
Its all explained in the book. I thought the scene was more effective in the movie, because it WASN’T explained…and man, was it bizarre looking. Anyway, I believe the man in the dog suit is the lover of the Overlook’s original owner (or maybe the owner is the one in the dog suit; can’t remember offhand). They were both present at the masquerade party, and there were a number of comments made by characters present that pointed out the homosexuality of the owner.
thank you for the answers… that question had been bugging me for a while, i was just so confused because i hadn’t remembered it being answered in the book.
Thanks!
