The Simpsons/King of the Hill/Family Guy 3/2/08 (spoilers)

:smack:
I saw that movie, too.

Actually, I thought it fit pretty well, and even if it didn’t… I think I’m very glad that this episode put Dropkick Murphys on my radar, because I hadn’t heard of them before and am very eager to get ahold of some of their albums now.

Also very glad that the closed captions accurately listed the song and the band so that I could immediately wikipedia them!

Been hungry for some new celtic rock since I’ve heard most of Great Big Sea’s catalog now.

I didn’t get the Scorsese joke, but I loved the Dune reference. “There were rats within rats!”

I tried watching King of the Hill, but it just made me angry as usual so I turned it off. Family Guy went on too long. More Herbert, less Brian and Lois!

I don’t get it. Having never seen any Scorsese movies, it went straight over my head.

The entire movie revolves around a rat for the mob on the police force and a rat for the police in the mob trying to figure out who the other is, and the last scene in the movie shows a ligering shot of an actual rat scurrying around- you’d have to be a mo-ron to have sat through the movie and not known is was about “rats”, especially when they use the word in the movie about a 100 times.

The Dahmer teen was Laotian, btw.

Correct.

And I didn’t realize the Cambodian thing was a pedophile joke, I just thought it was an ‘old racist’ joke.

I may have invented some new curses while waiting for that freaking NASCAR event to end.

Seems to me that they need faster cars. Also, fewer people sitting around saying [paraphrased] “That car went fast, but the car that passed it was going faster. Do you remember when that driver stayed in the lead and then when he wasn’t in the lead, the other guy was?” etc.

I hate the Herbert character in Family Guy. Something about pedophilia just isn’t funny to me, and they are milking that gag totally dry. I wish there would be an episode where Herbert and Quagmire both die of some kind of off-the-wall, flesh-eating STD. But I did have a big laugh at Chris’ line: “Are you a pedophile?”

Mike Judge is great, I loved Beavis and Butthead and Office Space. And I like the characters in King of the Hill (except maybe Peggy, she’s annoying), but I just can’t get into the plots.

I laughed out loud at Ralph’s line (wasn’t it “The rat symbolizes obviousness”?) even though I’ve never seen the Scorcese movie.

[QUOTE=Wee Bairn]
Yeah, but if you throw enough shit on a wall, some of it sticks (Two and Half Men, According to Jim, etc.). I watched two minutes of the new show and while it sucked, I’m sure its no worse than many big hits.

And I agree, Brain wants to bang Lois is pretty tiresome, which they pretty much admitted when Brian said he’d never do it again. And the Simpsons episode was OK, and worth it for Ralph’s spot-on jab at Scorsese- “the rat stands for oboviousness”.

Hold on…what did I miss? Did Lois finally violate the laws of Man, Nature, and Man and Nature’s God?

King of the Hill was good, but it just seemed way out of character for Hank not to know anything about buying cars.

No, sorry for not being clear- Brian tried to jump her bones, Lois stopped him, and he said he’d never try again. He also got into a fistfight with Peter about it, and Lois admitted she’s thought about what it would be like- she imagined it would be like doing it with a stuffed animal IIRC.

But Hank has a blind spot for father/authority figures. See his relationship with Buck Strickland, his football coach, and, naturally, his dad. One can imagine that Cotton never took Hank car shopping when he was a kid so Hank really had no idea how the car buying process worked when he first came across his “car guy” when he was a young man.

I doubt if Cotton ever shopped for a car since Hank was Bobby’s age. How long did he hold on to his Caddy before he gave it to Cousin Dusty? 34 or 35 years? He dangled it in front of Hank’s face like a carrot, then turned around and gave Hank the stick.

Re: the Simpsons, I loved the use of Mentos and Diet Coke in the episode. That was one of my favorite Mythbusters episodes, and although I know it didn’t originate with the Mythbusters, it’s still a fun insertion of pop culture into the show. I think it’s the second time they referred to the Mentos and Diet Coke reaction.

IIRC, Hank bought his first car from Cotton, said car breaking down almost immediately upon Hank’s buying it.
