That was a really bad episode for a variety of reasons. The superficial tolerance, the celebrity worship, the musicals, the lack of comedy, treating a vain 26 year old like the messiah, etc.
Its still a good show, but I think that was the worst episode ever and I’ve seen them all.
They’ve given you thousands of hours of entertainment for free. What could they possibly owe you? If anything, you owe them.
I see a lot of folks moaning about how bad the Simpsons have been for several seasons but I still enjoy all of them. Until that episode. The only funny part for me was when Moe walked across the railroad tracks.
If you are not a Lady Gaga fan, this episode didn’t have much to offer you except the commercials. I’m not a fan, so even though they apply the smallest amount of skepticism to her efforts by deflating the idea she can solve everybody’s problems just by being positive, there really wasn’t very much of interest here. That was too bad because I thought they had a pretty solid story idea - it just got wrapped up in this “Lady Gaga takes an interest in Lisa” plot instead of being developed. It seems like it’s tough to parody her act because it’s so flamboyant and for the most part, they just exaggerated it a little. (I did like her manager budgeting for the birds.) The only thing that made me laugh really hard here was Comic Book Guy’s line “Why does she do in defeat what I do in victory?”
In 5 years, when no one alive can seem to remember who or what Lady Gaga was, maybe this episode will have some kind of archival value for social scientists.
The only thing I could think during this episode was “Lisa, you got Michael Jackson to serenade you when you’re feeling bad.” I guess that good feeling can only last a couple decades before it needs a boost.
I still like The Simpsons, and rarely rag on them, but this episode was probably the worse I’ve ever seen. I know who Lady Gaga is, but I’m not a fan and I do not know the minute details of her career enough to get the humor.
See, I just have to assume that at some point in her career, she wore a meat dress (is that like a meat helmet?). I listen to a metric shit-ton of music, but don’t know a thing about meat as garments. I guess I don’t find her significant enough to have an episode devoted to her.
I’m not arguing against liking it, I’m glad you did…just wish I did!
Parody aside, no, that’s not the problem for me. The problem was that it felt like a Lady Gaga story that involved the Simpsons rather than the other way around, and almost all of the jokes were based around her rather than the Simpsons and the Springfield characters. I get it already- she wears crazy costumes and uses big crazy stage sets and things. (Homer cooking the meat dress was an OK joke.) I don’t like her music and the episode contained a pretty large dose of it, and mild parodies of something that is already so far over the top are just not all that funny. I like plenty of Lisa episodes, including the Michael Jackson one even though I wasn’t a Michael Jackson fan either.
It didn’t come across to me like they were making fun of her. She’s over the top and, from what I gather, proud of it. How, then, is pointing out that she’s over the top making fun of her? This piece of crap seemed like a half-hour commercial for Lady Gaga, and it have very few laughs. So yeah, put me in the “terrible episode” pile.
I just got around to watching this episode, and thanks to you guys hatin’ on it, I had very low expectations—wasn’t even sure if it would be worth watching. I was pleasantly surprised: there was actually some pretty solid comedy in the scenes that didn’t involve Lady Gaga. Not the best episode ever, but hardly the worst, either.
