the Sing yer li'l ol' heart out MMP

Such a deal! 30 for the price of 30.

This was the weekend of would-be or possibly drunk drivers for us. On Saturday morning, our neighbor comes over and asks if we can drive her over to where her friend’s car was parked. Seems that on Friday, much alcohol was consumed and her friend was in no shape to drive, so our neighbor took her home. Now, she just needed to retrieve her friend’s car. The world needs more friends like that so we were happy to help her out.

Last night, on the way home, we were behind someone who took off from the stop light at 20 MPH in a 50 MPH zone, and was wobbling and weaving back and forth and crossing the center. I call 911 and by the time they pick up and I say I’m reporting a possible DUI, they turn off the road into a neighborhood, pull broadly into a driveway and park. At which point, I tell the dispatcher that they appear to have parked and hopefully will stay home. Unsurprisingly, the dispatcher agreed.

gotti good on you for callin’ 911 anyways. I’ve done that before due to an erratic driver. My first thought was drunk driver but one never knows for sure. In any case this was somebody who did not belong behind the wheel of a car. I got to see this car stopped by the Sherrif’s Patrol that showed up within a minute of the call. Obviously that Sherrif’s Deputy was patrolin’ the road. Ok, I assume it was in response to my call cause the patrol car came whizzin’ up the road blue lights a blazin’ right after I called.

Tonight is men’s night at the churchhouse. I have steaks marinatin’ and OYKW is responsible for bringin’ beerverages. Well, he’ll buy ‘em when he shows back up here in a while. He’s home doin’ laundry right now. Hmmm… just had a thought. He’s off today. Mayhaps I should do him the honor of allowin’ him to buy me lunch.

Awesome OP, Rosie! I’m a life-long musician, too (piano lessons at 7, voice lessons at 16 – and again now – etc.). Last spring I discovered that my love of jazz includes something of a knack for singing/performing it, and I’m just starting to perform a little bit locally. I’m not out to quit my day job or anything, but if I could get to a point where I’m headlining once or twice a month I’d be pretty damn happy. Anyway, a couple of years ago I looked into the Sweet Adelines: they aren’t right for me at the moment, but I hope to try them someday!

Bailey and I enjoyed the cooler weather at the dog park on Friday evening, and that night I had Chick-Fil-A for dinner. There are no words to describe how much I love Chick-Fil-A…YUM!

Saturday night I went downtown and saw Allan Harris at the Mandarin Oriental hotel (he’s from NY, but was in DC for the weekend). He sounds a lot like Nat “King” Cole, and was well worth seeing. The Mandarin is a great place for jazz, too: their Music Director and main pianist also teaches a workshop that I can’t seem to stop taking, and I’ve been there enough times now that the staff has started to recognize me. I’ll be back on Friday night to see the incomparable Lena Seikaly.

Yesterday I did a lot of nothing. Laundry last night, but otherwise the dog and I were just a couple of bums. I think we both enjoyed it – though it’s hard to tell when Bailey is bored vs just being a dog. grin

I’m off to meet OYKW at that paragon of fine dinin’ known as Three Squares Diner. Yeah we go all out!

You people have majors my family would never believe exist.

Holiday today, moved in from yesterday; only for half of Spain, since the central government chose not to do the move themselves and only half the regional govenrments did. We get holidays set at the national, regional and local level.

I can’t sing but can’t paint either, oh well.

Yes. Definitely. In Barbershop, the voice parts are quite different than a traditional mixed choir.
Can you hit the really high note with ease? You’re a Tenor.
Can you sing a melody well, but have trouble with harmonies? You’re a Lead.
Do you make up harmonies to songs on the radio? You’re a Baritone.
Are you better at low notes, and/or prefer the “rhythm” parts of songs? You’re a Bass.
I recommend finding the chapter in your area, and go to one of their performances. You’ll be surprised (maybe even pleased) at how different it is from what you’re used to.

Ok, so I just have to tell you all about two mildly amusing things that just happened. First of all, I just finished delivering lunch and decided I was hungry so I heated up some food and sat down on the couch. And there I sit, fork poised in mid-air and my grandma comes in and says, “Do you want to go out to lunch in a little bit?” So, I put the fork down. (Ok, I had a couple of bites first.) We’re going out to lunch in about an hour.

Then, as I was sitting there I got a call from a private number. I answered it and it was someone calling about the lunch that I just delivered. Of course I always assume the worst. She was calling to find out how I make my Ranch dressing because she and some of the other women there think it’s so good that they ‘would like to drink it.’

I’m so annoyed. I get bouts of insomnia but it’s not too bad because I work afternoons and evenings and don’t have to be up early. Except, it never seems to fail that when I’m awake until 4 or 5 am, someone will ring my doorbell at 9 am. I don’t answer the door if I’m not expecting anyone* because it’s always either a J. W., someone wanting to buy my van or mow my lawn. So of course that happened this morning after I had 5 hours of sleep. So I ignored it and went back to sleep but I ended up sleeping later than I wanted. There were no religious pamphlets on my door so I’m guessing it was one of the other options.

*Anyone who knows me doesn’t come by at 9am and calls if it’s important. Anything else important like Police or Fire would bang on the door and shout “police!” or “fire!” or “run, Godzilla is coming!”.

I love it when that happens at work! It doesn’t happen often, but I’ll pretty much always ditch whatever the hell I’m eating/about to eat for the chance to go out to lunch with someone. Heck, I’ve been known to go out after I already ate something.

Same here. I’ve even stopped pretending that I’m not home.

(Sorry about being woken up! :()

It’s too bad you don’t live closer. We could [del]axe murder[/del] eat lunch together all the time. I LOVE going out for lunch.

I realized that I forgot to say, HI SPAZ!!!

Blurf.

New receptionist is perky (and not wearing jeans.)

Our office is definitely not ready for the party on Thursday.

Very tired today.

We lunched at the fine dinin’ establishment I mentioned earlier. I had a good ham 'n cheese omelette! OYKW was thrilled, thrilled I say that he had the opportunity to take me to lunch. He said so.

I am in Houston and holy cow is it a tad bit on the warm side. And humid. Did I mention warm?

A morning of presentations now I am updating databases followed by intern dinner then tomorrow more presentations and tours! I can put on my game face and be ‘Yay we are an awesome company to work for’ for about 2 days. Then my mask slips when how badly I am being screwed over right now comes back to me. Oh well. 9 more months!

I am very much looking forward to our belated anniversary dinner on Friday night. Other than that it is Monday. Rah!

I am also one of those ‘Can’t carry a tune in a bucket types’ although I do sing in the car a lot and get a lot of funny looks when I am rocking out

My youngest nephew has a BA in cello and his Masters in liturgical music. His older brother is a boxologist with his BA and Masters in engineering (centering on the design and manufacture of cardboard and boxes).

Kids! When I graduated you settled for something like “music” or “psychology” on your sheepskin and were damn glad to get it. :smack:

I sang in choruses at school for several years - I even directed a girls’ chorus one year. I also did a stint in a Polish chorus (singing mostly folk-type music) and a couple church choirs. And being a self-taught guitarist, I did my share of sing-alongs at picnics and such. I’ve sung from soprano 1 to tenor. But it’s been a long time since I sang, and I don’t expect I’ll ever get back into it. And, not to insult anyone, but I can’t stand barbershop harmonies. They all sound the same to me and after a few minutes I want to gouge my ears out. But I can listen to more traditional type choruses all day - especially all men.

Today pretty much sucked, but I’m home, so there’s that. It’s getting darker our - rain is threatened. Spousal unit doesn’t want supper, so it’s the kid and me - if I wasn’t broke, I’d just take her to Bad Chinese and be done with it. But I don’t get paid till Thursday, so ham it is.

One down, 4 to go. Oh, and I got a notice from my mortgage co that out payment is going up $10/mo - stoopit taxes.

Such is the excitement that is my life.

We just got one bizarro phone call with three different recorded voices, as indicated by the various colors below:

Hello, this is a message for Mary Jones. If you are not Mary Jones, please do not listen to the rest of this message. This is Cathy Collector from XYZ Company calling about a debt collection. Any information received will be used to collect on this debt. Please call me at 888-888-XXXX between 8 and 5. That’s Cathy Collector at 888-888-XXXX between 8 and 5.

Names and numbers were changed, and yes, I listened to the message and no, it was not for me. Never got a wrong number like this before. Oh, and the orange and green voices were female, while the purple was a very deep male voice. Weird…

fcm I get those a lot…always looking for someone different. The current person they are looking for is a Steven Sanchez.

I should be leaving to head to the intern dinner in about 5 mins but I am currently refusing to leave until the thunder, lightening and torrential downpour quit. It has been doing this for 8 mins and the sky appears to be getting darker still. I may be here a while

True story from the Fourth of July: Army Boy*, his brother Computer Boy**, and I were driving back from Finance City+ to Hippy Hollow after visiting their family. We saw a guy walking barefoot along the side of I-40 near Marion. Army Boy saw what he thought was blood on the back of the guy’s shirt. After a brief debate, we decided calling 911 was the way to go. Army Boy called and told them what we saw. They said, “Yeah, we know about him. He’s walking to Hendersonville.”

Hendersonville is about 50 miles from Marion. And it’s not on I-40.

Okay then!

Welcome to the mountains. We got all kinds here.

(*Army Boy will be Culinary Boy starting Wednesday. Someone is starting Culinary School on Wednesday.
**Computer Boy lives with us now. Long story that I don’t want to go into again right now. Made a long (locked) post on LJ about it last night.
+Finance City is Charlotte. Financial capital of North Kakalakee. Hopefully this will be the last footnote.)

Photos from my musical weekend

YOU LISTENED TO THE MESSAGE??? THEY SAID DO NOT LISTEN TO THE MESSAGE! In one week, Mary Jones is going to come crawling through your telephone…
