That’s just what the libs WANT you to think!

I’m all for checks and balances even if we occasionally end up with a Bush. But there’s no way they could ever imagined someone like Trump. Even very bad, corrupt presidents of the past at least made some passing attempt at governing the country. Even if they were terrible at it or their views were skewed at least most of them did what they thought was right. I don’t believe for one second Trump is trying to do the “right thing”.
The third reply to your, I presume, rhetorical question.
The purpose of checks and balances is not to oust a president that lots of people don’t like, who doesn’t act like an adult, who is corrupt, and who has no understanding whatever of how our government works. The purpose of checks and balances (among other things) is to make sure that one corrupt branch does not make the whole government corrupt, and that the other two branches have means of keeping the corrupt branch from steaming too far off the rails. So far, in my view, high marks for achieving that purpose. Considering the number of push-backs he has gotten even from his own staff, let alone from Congress and the judiciary, I don’t think people realize how much worse it would be without checks and balances.
OMG, this made me laugh right out loud. You’re collecting material for a stand-up act, amirite? Got to admit, you had the board going for a good long while, but you just outed yourself as a comedian! Well done and best of luck in your career. ![]()
As a non-American, my shock and disappointment is that his schtick still plays well to a huge part of the American population.
My sense of America being a land of decorum, tradition, and respect was an illusion.
My fear is that the baseness that lurks at the surface of American society, and feeds on the vulgarity and chaos by the president, is present in my country and other parts of the world. And that the American model of politics may play well here too with politicians emboldened by the success of your president.
And equally disappointing, things will never be the same even once the president is no longer in office.
:mad:y
I’m not familiar with all of the views of all of the posters on this board so I assumed this was parody. Reading responses I’m not so sure.
Tell me, are you serious?
No. He isn’t.
That’s ok, these are parody-resistant times

Yeah, but in the UK the Whig and Tory parties had been active for most of a century.
You can’t blame somebody for not being able to predict the future, not so much for misreading the present and recent history.
What the FF wanted was a benevolent Sun King ala Louis XIV but periodically elected rather than inherited.
It’s good that removing the Head of State is a very high bar, but removing the Head of Government should be a routine process. They are called elections and majority support. Who’s to say what is stupid or poor performance anyway?
LOL, no. But putting a smilie or something gives it away ![]()
Cause those damn Libs just don’t get it!
Well then why … but but but … oh, I get it. ![]()
I personally feel the best satire straddles the line between “true” and “ridiculous”

You seem to have a different definition of corrupt to myself.
Checks and balances are there to stop the abuse of power.
That members of the WH staff ignored instructions (and didn’t resign their position in protest) is insolence and insubordination, not checks & balances, even if an arguably greater good was achieved.
Errm, you’d already had the literally senile St Ronnie…
His incompetence, childishness and sloth are the best features of his Presidency! Imagine how much worse this would be if the President were just as criminal and despicable as Trump, but was clever enough to better pursue his evil agenda.
Loss of respect and prestige is just part of the permanent damage we are suffering. U.S. government science has taken a huge blow, along with the institutional knowledge of the State Department. Government debt will end up trillions of dollars more than it needed to be. Russian power has benefited hugely from Trumpist blunders or treasons. The fight against climate change is set back. And now it appears that the criminals will get a 5-4 Scotus vote to sabotage the 2020 census, with the GOP thereby gaining some illicit Congress seats, electors, and moneys.
The election of Donald Trump is one of saddest tragedies of our lifetimes.
I have friends and family in New Zealand, Australia, and England. I use to apologize because of Trump. Now I just refer to me as a victim.
Yes, imagine if Mitch McConnell were president. :smack:
One of the things we learned from the Mueller Report is that a big reason why illegal things weren’t pursued is that others (cabinet members, political appointees and career executive office staff) refused to do things he suggested or wanted to be done.
Ever listened to Trump when he actually has to say something “official” and is not just off-the-cuff riffing? He sounds like someone is literally giving him the words one at a time so he can’t fuck it up.
.
Oh, how aware I am of all that. It is almost too painful to bear. I agree with every word and would only amend your statement regarding institutional knowledge to include virtually all departments of government, not just State.
Richard Painter said today that he believed Trump’s “presidency” will set affect our country adversely for 100 years. I think he is too optimistic.
