I certainly didn’t see Christopher’s death coming like that. I guess it all shows that Tony has his self-preservation at heart, despite how he feels about the people he loves; everything he said to Melfi in the dream was exactly how he felt. His efforts to justify those feelings to Carm and people at the wedding by discussing how the tree branch went through the baby were just awkward.
I’m still trying to sort out the sunset light and the “I get it!” At the end. All of the Vegas scenes seemed really out of place, especially the driving shots.
I’m intrigued as to how things are going to go down between Phil and Tony.
The thing about vegas is that half the time he was there, he was tripping. So we could say he was on an peyote trip, or, he’s in a coma/dead from the accident. But I can’t imagine them doing the coma thing again. And with only three episodes left, it would be waste of time.
I think it all goes back to Tony’s “in the big picture, I’m up” comment.
The accident was a giant stroke of luck for Tony. He had to know that Christopher was going to need to disappear pretty soon, and there was just no good way to do that. He would have agonized himself into a heart attack over it, and might never have gotten around to it. Considering how nuts Carmela has been about Adriana’s disappearance, she would have gone completely ape over Christopher, and her powers of denial might not have held up.
He knows that the accident was a good thing, and then he had some impressive wins at the roulette table, not to mention some spectacular nookie. I think he realized that things are finally coming up Tony again, and maybe that he had to go through a bad streak before it could happen–thus “I get it”.
As far as the light and “I get it!”- maybe Tony was just staring at a light because he was high, which ain’t exatly unusual, but I thought that reminded him of his hospital stay. The second half of the episode, with the Vegas trip, gambling, drugs, and exulting in Christopher’s death, was Tony stopping to smell the roses. He was talking about that with Christopher right before the crash, too.
I was amused/interested to see Paulie have a moment or two of humanity in this one, showing some regret for not being more supportive of Chris.
Tony & Bobby at the lake cottage: We had the scene where Tony could have taken Bobby out after their fight while they were driving in the woods -he didn’t, but we all felt the chance was there.
Tony & Paulie’s road trip: Tony had the chance to have Paulie sleeping with the fishes. The scenes went out of their way to push that point. Again, Paulie passed the test and Tony didn’t.
Tony & Christofa: He didn’t pass the test.
Is there a pattern here? Will there be a Tony & Silvio episode?
Don’t blink though, or you’ll miss it. He was back to being Paulie Walnuts at his own viewing - (“I printed up 500 cards!”)
I must say, when Tony first woke and revealed a dream, I was curious how much was going to be unwound. I was afraid that they’d rewind back before the Moltisanti killing.
While A.J. participated in the beatdown, he was the most disturbed by it. He was caught up in the moment, but soon realized that wasn’t where or who he wanted to be. I think A.J. is realizing that he doesn’t want to follow in Daddy’s footsteps, but he doesn’t have much of a future any other way. He’s trapped by his heritage and his own laziness.
You couldn’t expect it to last. I could understand him feeling upset that his associates weren’t paying him any mind, but then again, he’s got no real friends. And the swearing revenge was a little much.
I think Silvio is the one sure thing, the solid company man. In a way, he passed his test when Tony was in the Coma. He does not want to be and cannot handle being the top guy. He is loyal almost to a fault and has only once in all the seasons been shown getting stupidly and carelessly angry.
I think he got his final story arc with the episode that ended his him cooking up the rabbit. He had a really short scene in this episode at the funeral.
God, I hope not. He’s either an ingratiating, boot-licking, obsequious loser, or a whiny, petulant, pathetic loser. His wife has way more balls than he does.
Is that what he said? I could have sworn I heard “I did it!”, and took it as kind of a combination admission of guilt/expression of relief from ridding himself of Chrissy as a drain on his patience.
That was brilliant, wasn’t it? The baby seat gave Tony the rationalization he needed, and he used it later, to get people to say bad stuff about Chris. He needed to wait though. People don’t start dissing the dead until the funeral’s over.
I thought it was encouraging that he really seemed to be engaged in the classes he’s auditing. Maybe he’ll shape up and dump his criminal friends, go to school, etc. He seemed to be responding well to the medication until the beating, at least.
Artie was in this episode. He was at the wake. When they boys were all standing around talking and mocking Chrissy’s mother and widow, he was the guy on the far right.
I’m pretty sure it was “I get it,” and I think it means that by getting rid of Christopher who was dragging him down, and then taking time to smell the roses and do all those things he can’t do because of responsibilities, his good fortune will come back to him.
I, for one, would love to see a “Rise of Tony” movie. I’d like to see if the good old days were as good as he and Paulie remembered and if Tony was always conflicted or if it was something that started with the ducks in the pool.
And since I’m on duck watch, more sounds of ducks when the asbestos was dumped into the lake.
