The Sopranos on A&E

Last night was the debut of the “cleaned up” version of The Sopranos. Looks like the plan is to show 2 episodes a week back-to-back; first on Wednesday at 9pm and then the next Monday.

I don’t think I had seen those episodes since way back when… I don’t own any of the DVDs… boy does AJ look young.

Well whaddayathink?? Anybody disappointed with “frick” instead of “fuck” or blurry hooters?

Anybody see the show for the very first time?

I haven’t seen either incarnation, but when I first heard about it, I thought of the Mad TV (I think) skit of “Sopranos on PAX TV” when they chop out everything and are left with about 30 seconds of show.

And that’s what I was worried about with this. Did they really dub over the cursing? Did that bug you?

It was like watching Showgirls on TBS.

I have never seen an episode but plan to watch it from the beginning this way. Will I still get the best of the show or is too much cut out? Is it mostly just swearing / nudity cleaned up or will I be missing entire scenes?

Ironically, I have HBO but it expires at the end of this month and the show wasn’t on for the time I had it.

It didn’t bother me. I dumped HBO after about the second season of the show, (so I have a lot of catching up to do) so I’ve seen both versions. Yeah, it was noticable but not overhwelmingly so. I did notice in BaDa Bing that a dancer now seemed to have on a bikini top when I don’t remember any of the girls on stage wearing them first time around. And I’m pretty sure the violence was edited out - specifically Christopher killing that guy from the Czech garbage company.

I haven’t seen “The Sopranos” on A&E, but I am watching “Six Feet Under” for the first time on Bravo. Same deal. Man, do those people use the F-word a lot. I find it kind of annoying (the substitution of “frickin”), but I’ve kind of gotten used to it.

Can we look forward to the same treatment of “Deadwood”?

I’ve never seen one episode, and I enjoyed it a lot. The dubbing of the cussing was kind of annoying, but the plot was great! If I don’t know I’m missing something, like cut scenes, maybe it won’t matter. Nothing appeared to be missing (as far as continuity) to me.

I can’t believe he chased down and ran over that guy with the car! That was great! Mom is a lot of fun, too. And I was totally empathizing with Tony (is that his name?) about the ducks.

I don’t mind watching SFU with the occasional “frick”, but the Sopranos isn’t really the Sopranos if you take out the swearing, tone down the sex, and censor the violence. I’ll stick to renting the DVDs if I ever want to watch an episode.

FYI, I remember reading that when they filmed each episode, if there was a scene with nudity, they woulr shoot it twice, once with nudity, once without.

That way if they ever wanted to syndicate the show, it would be available for a broader market.

The scenes in the nightclub look weird. The guys talking look like they’re at a table in some other room with plain blue walls about a half mile away from the dancers.

Some of the bowdlerizing results in silliness. Young Tony Jr. says, “So we don’t get no frickin’ ziti?” and the adults reprimand him for foul language. Yeah. Right.

If they did this with Deadwood it would become basically a silent movie.
