The Soup canceled on E!

I’ll miss the show too! One thing though, Talk Soup and The Soup were two different shows. (Though they get confused and are/were basically identical.) I thought they were the same too, but McHale brought that up in the most recent ep where he announced the cancellation. I checked IMDB. Talk Soup was on from 1991? to 2002 (Greg Kinnear/Aisha Tyler/John Henson etc.) and The Soup (McHale the whole time I think) started in 2004.

I’ll miss Tankini and Lou the chihuahua :frowning:

The Soup has kinda lost it’s edge by bringing on guest stars all the time. I watched it regularly from the time they were doing “La Madrastra” and had Brokeback Kong/Memoirs of A Geisha Kong until about two years ago. I still would watch it when I saw it was on, but it gradually became less “making fun of everything else E! stood for” and was simply promoting those shows in disguise. Joel seemed to not be as into it as he used to be, either. The golden age of shows featuring STD infested washed up rock stars looking for “love” from a bevy of alcoholic, violent, wannabe pornstars is also passed, and those were the meat and potatoes of The Soup.

Isn’t that Mankini?

I just watched this last Friday’s and yes, they talked about it quite a bit.

It was also Joel’s birthday, so happy birthday, Joel.

I assume we will now get a few weeks of extra-E!-bashing. I’m going to love every minute. They need to have Jon Henson on the final episode. And Greg Kinnear. And maybe Aisha Tyler and Hal Sparks.

Ya know this reminded me that back in the day they used to have a special promo roll called ’Let’s Take Some E!' of a women’s lips swallowing a pill that they would use to introduce segments that mocked any actual E! shows. But gradually E! became nothing but horrible, soulless reality shows so using it became redundant!!

The more I think about it the more it seems like the show is really being canceled out of spite. Networks don’t normally cancel profitable shows, and how could The Soup not be making money?! It is probably the cheapest half hour produced on television. They have a minimal crew (one, occasionally two cameras), Adobe After Effects graphics, a green screen set, guest stars who ‘get it’ so they’re paid scale like every other talk show etc. The biggest expense would probably be Joel’s salary and he hardly seems like a diva. Plus if they just hired a new host they’d obviously be paid less.

Like I said, the inmates have taken over the asylum. Fuck you E!. Fuck you right in the ear…

PEOPLE, GET YOUR SOUP STRAIGHT

Greg Kinear and John Henson never hosted the Soup, only Joel McHale ever hosted the Soup (unless maybe there was a guest host, I didn’t see every show, so maybe that happened, maybe not, but that’s beside the point).

Kinear and Henson (and a few other people) hosted TALK SOUP, a similar, but different show than THE SOUP, and one that went off the air for many years before THE SOUP ever existed. Talk Soup covered only talk shows (though sometimes they were somewhat liberal with what constituted a talk show) while The Soup had a much more varied area of coverage.

Yeah yeah, but it’s still just a retooled version of the same show. It even shared some stage crew members. Years ago on The Soup they used to make a heavy-set burly stage manager dress up as some Mexican woman from an awful Telemundo cooking program they had clips of. At one point after doing it several times he broke character while in the ridiculous get-up and doing a falsetto Spanish accent, looked at Joel and said in his deep, regular voice, “Kinear never made me do this!”.

Talk Soup was also on nightly, instead of just weekly like The Soup. I remember because back when I got one of my first TiVos I didn’t realize this and I couldn’t understand why it wasn’t recording The Soup every night. I made it manually do it and saw that it was just the same weekly episode repeated…

We know, but it was only briefly off the air between re-workings.

They even had John Henson on once as a “ghost of the past”.
