Oh wait, that won’t distinguish them from any other religion.

The Church of Republican Jesus

Bah. Beat me to it.

If the behavior of individual Southern Baptist churches scales up, it doesn’t matter what name they pick. About half of them will hate it and refuse to change, and both factions will pick some doctrinal nit to fulminate about. After a while, there will be two churches, and each side will claim they kicked the other out.

Holy Foamin’ Church of the Incredible Presumption (Deformed).

In that sleepy little town of Pascagoula! (Ray Stevens was a genius to rhyme Pascagoula and Hallelujah.)

Back on track, some of those suggestions are hysterical. But speaking as someone who attends a Southern Baptist church, it’s going to take a hell of a lot more than a name change to solve the problem.

The church of the reformed grilled Cheesus.

Since the purpose of the name change is to find something with a better image, I suggest…

“The Nazis”.

This was the first name that came to me.

I always enjoy reading your posts but I have to correct you on this point - MLK was not ever affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. He was first a minister in the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. and then affiliated with the Progressive National Baptist Convention.

I was raised in SBC churches and while there weren’t any openly hostile attitudes toward minorities it was still a pretty lily-white group of people. That was in the 60’s - 80’s. Things have changed somewhat in recent years but no that much. After integrating 47 years ago, Baylor University, the largest school associated with the SBC, has only about 7% African American enrollment.

Idiocy. Southern Baptist is one of the most recognizable brand names in history, right up there with Coke and Ford. Keep it!
