The SPAM thread

I used to love Vienna sausages as a kid, we always had them in the house. Could eat them hot or cold. Then didn’t eat them for a long time, went vegetarian for a while. Decided to buy some for emergency hurricane rations a few years ago. Not long after I was hungry and there was nothing else in the house, so I opened it. I could only manage to eat one. The dog thoroughly enjoyed the rest. I don’t think spam would be much better. I think there’d have to be a real emergency for me to eat it or Vienna sausages.

grin No problem.

But seriously, not sure where you are but if it’s anywhere that has Hawaiian restaurants/fast food, get a Spam Musubi. L&L Hawaiian Barbecue is a pretty big chain (at least out here), and should be able to give you an idea - though every place makes it slightly differently. You can also get them at some Japanese places (not sushi bars of course).

If you’re in Southern CA, I can recommend an AWESOME place, both for Spam Musubi and Hawaiian/Japanese food in general.

Spam used to sponser the “George Burns and Gracie Allen Show” on radio so I know about a million ways to fix spam.

Gracie) George the sponsor’s coming over, put on a suit
George) Oh Gracie I look fine like I am
Gracie) George you should look formal with Hormal

(Spam was made by Hormel, so of course Gracie mispronounces Hor-mel to rhyme with formal)

I love Spam, but only real Spam the reduced fat and the turkey Spam just aren’t the same.

Simple Spam sandwhich rocks, bread, mustard and spam

I’ll have your spam. I love it. I’m having spam spam spam spam spam spam spam beaked beans spam spam spam and spam!
Anyone for Spamburgers?

I tried it again this spring as I received a free can. It’s expensive around here. Bacon costs less. I hated the taste. It was sickening sweet and the after taste had me queasy for the rest of the day. I only ate half of a slice before throwing away the whole package. Stick to buying ham which is also cheaper than Spam around here.

I think my mother must have learned her early cooking skills during WWII, because we ate a lot of stuff like this when I was very young. We were pretty solidly middle class, so I don’t think it was a financial thing, although my mom was a child of The Depression. I remember liking it as a kid, but then I also liked the Velveeta cheese and the crappy margarine we ate, too. What do kids know?

The SPAM commercial was cute. It lead me to the Weird Al Yankovic - Spam video.

Sadly I’m in the northern part - Santa Cruz area.

Hey, SPAM and Velveeta? Hmmmm… time for experimentation. A SPAM grilled (Velveeta) cheese sandwich with crappy margarine.

Sadly? I’m just a bit over the hill, btw.

Come to think of it, I’m sure I’ve had that. Spam and Velveeta, fried in crappy margarine.

Wow, thanks for that. None of the SC places carry them so it looks like a trip to San Jose is in my near future. But I’m always looking for an excuse to go over the hill!

Yeah, I guess that did come out wrong… sadly in the sense of not being able to enjoy the great treat described. Actually, I live in Capitola. It’s paradise on earth. Wouldn’t trade living here for anything.

I don’t mind the taste too much, but I agree with the last point – I would never buy Spam as long as ham is cheaper.

I knew what you meant, but it was kind of funny. Capitola is great. Gotta love the Paradise Grill!

SPAM with Cheese!

CMC fnord!

Awww, I’m sure you’re still vital and vibrant. Don’t let your advancing years rob you of the pleasures that old age can bring.

My mom used to make awesome pizza burgers with SPAM as an ingredient. Haven’t had those in probably a decade. Other than that, I never cared for SPAM.

I have been to the SPAM Museum, however. There, I beat my friend at SPAM-related trivia. Good times, good times.

Oh, also: http://spamalot.spam.com/go/game/
Play as either the English or the French.

I grew up on spam. Fried in grilled cheese, chopped up in mac-n-cheese, spam and eggs. It’s super salty but not bad at all. I don’t buy it now because it’s not really cheaper or tastier than buying a ham. Last time I bought it I used it on a Hawaiian pizza. Not bad!

One of the best-tasting dinners I had on a Hawaiian vacation was a simple dish of fried turkey spam, green beans and sauteed onions. I wasn’t so sure when the meal was described to me, but it was absolutely delicious. I dunno, maybe the setting (a condo with an ocean view in Hana) had something to do with it?

Thanks to all who have posted here. I’ve only had Spam once in my life (in a simple sandwich, as Johnny described), and I rather liked it. Because I enjoyed that sandwich, I got a tin of it the other day, but since I’m unlikely to eat a whole tin in one sandwich, I am flummoxed as to what else I could do with it.

How long does it keep? If I slice off a bit for a sandwich, how do I keep the rest for my next one? (I’m thinking Saran and the fridge.)

It fries up like bacon? I’m picturing a nice Sunday breakfast, with Spam-bacon, waffles, juice, and coffee. And the Sunday paper’s crossword.

Thanks for any help.

I wouldn’t say it fries up like bacon, but it can be fried and is tasty. It does get saltier when fried. I’ll bet I could get through a whole package of bacon if I wanted to, but I can’t eat more than a couple of slices of fried SPAM with a couple of fried eggs.

Waffles, eh? I wonder how fried SPAM would taste with maple syrup?
