Rancourt is terrible?? ever hit a correct note?? mnemosyne we get it. You hate the Bruins and everything to do with Boston. Why don’t you keeps your asinine, ignorant comments to yourself so you don’t look like such a pathetic troll
Not unless they changed the rules this year. The last rule book I have says:
63.4 Objects Thrown on the Ice – In the event that objects are thrown on the ice that interfere with the progress of the game, the Referee shall blow the whistle and stop the play and the puck shall be faced-off at a face-off spot in the zone nearest to the spot where play is stopped. When objects are thrown on the ice during a stoppage in play, including after the scoring of a goal, the Referee shall have announced over the public address system that any further occurrences will result in a bench minor penalty being assessed to the home Team. Articles thrown onto the ice following a special occasion (i.e. hat trick) will not result in a bench minor penalty being assessed. Refer also to Rule 53.6 when spectator interference occurs during a breakaway.
Stuff thrown on the ice after the game is over can hardly interfere with the play? And you’d have to give a warning in any case. I’d also think winning a game in the Stanley Cup finals is a special occasion. (BTW I think that’s badly worded. “i.e.” should mean that’s the only special occasion recognized, but if that’s really what they meant they just should have worded it that way.
When? On the same play? Actually I’ve been finding the Canucks to be pathetic slashers all game (they were almost laughingly bad today) but I’m not sure what you’re referring to. Which isn’t to mean it didn’t happen… can you be more specific?
Still, that was shameful of Thomas; he’s sitting on a shutout after pasting the Canucks last game, and he does such a vicious slash to the leg? It’s unpleasant to watch. He’s in a position to look good, and instead he looks cheap.
It’s asinine and ignorant to not like someone’s singing? Sure the “ever hit a correct note” comment was exaggerated for effect, but wow… Sensitive much?
Do we get to call one another trolls in this forum now? Or is it just after watching such a pathetic display of a) lousy power play (Vancouver); b) lousy ice (Boston Garden) and of course c) the usual lousy calls (Refs) that we all get so cranky?

No.
Fred Garvin, you’ve been here for the better part of three years now. I expect you to know that direct insults and calling people trolls is not acceptable behaviour in the Game Room. Since this is a two-fer and you should know better, this will result in a Warning. Don’t do this again.
And to everyone, simmer down, take it to the pit or this thread will be closed.

Yes, they showed the replay of it twice, with the commentators talking about it. First was from the regular side camera, though the slash is only just visible on the right side of the screen, then from above, where Burrows very clearly and blatantly slashes Thomas’ stick out of his hand by hitting the butt-end with his blade. As soon as Thomas regains his stick is when he retaliates.
Of course it could well be argued that this would never have happened if the NHL had had the stones to suspend Burrows for biting Bergeron.
Yes, it was immediately before. Thomas picked up his stick and slashed back.
I guess I did miss that… I think RDS showed the replay footage more from right before the slash, but I just don’t recall Thomas picking up his stick. The two were going at it quite a bit all night long (as was everyone else, really… I think every player gave and received a couple of slashes!) so it doesn’t really surprise me. I just didn’t notice that one.
Although I still can’t help but think that a stick-to-stick slash, even if it causes one player to drop his stick, doesn’t quite warrant a two-handed full swing intentional hit to leg. It’s just over-the-top for me, especially since Thomas was in a position to take the high road. But he’s a Bruin, and I guess he felt the need to meet my expectations - they don’t just beat other teams, they beat them up!
I don’t know that suspending Burrows for the finger bite would have prevented all this. Maybe; I can see the argument. In my mind, though, it’s pretty clear the league has lost control of these teams, and things are just going to continue to escalate.
I don’t like it, because these tactics aren’t why I enjoy hockey. I want to see good plays, good passes, sweet shots and clever goals and awesome saves. That’s mostly not happening in this series.
The Versus network telecast showed Thomas’s slash a bunch of times, but only showed once the angle where Burrows clearly and deliberately knocked Thomas’s stick out of his hands. So it’s quite possible to have missed seeing the initial slash and only seen Thomas’s retaliation.
I recall, though I don’t know when or where, either a commentator or player saying that it wasn’t the first time Thomas had his stick knocked away in that game, and decided to finally do something about it.
I still think it was over-the-top, even if that puts a little more context around it. Burrows certainly was being a little shit most of the game.
I think, had it been any other player, a 2 handed swing like that would have gotten them kicked out of the game. It’s part of why I feel the refs and league have lost control of the series; they didn’t have the fortitude to actually punish Thomas in relation to the slash (and yeah, I know how hard it is to justify kicking the *goalie *out of a game, but I don’t feel they should be immune to the rules). They gave Burrows and Thomas each a 2… I know all the damn NHL rules are at the “Referee’s discretion”, but I have a hard time seeing how that was not a major and game misconduct (deliberate attempt to injure) according to the rules.
Unless the refs have the balls to actually call everything, thereby forcing the players to play hockey rather than poke-with-the-stick-and-punch-in-the-head, we are just going to see more and more of this bullshit. Sure, it will suck to have 8 guys in each penalty box and only have 3 minutes of game played an hour into the broadcast, but I’d like to think *most *players are smart enough to learn to stop doing [whatever] when a whistle blows every time they do it ![]()
Yeah, yeah, I’ll keep dreaming.
Is there any way neither team can win this? ![]()
In other news, someone finally told Gary Bettman that billionaires have even MORE money to use to save struggling franchises than millionaires, and he’s told Jim Balsillie that he could still get a team, as long as he plays nice! I wonder if Bettman eats his crow with ketchup?
So, let’s start up the random speculation/dreaming/wishful thinking merry-go-round again: Coyotes to Hamilton! Make it seven becomes make it eight. Québec City gets the Islanders for nine, all for 2012. ![]()
Here’s what I don’t get: The Bruins went into Vancouver and played the heavy favorites to a near stand-still on their home ice. They come back to Boston and absolutely throttle the Canucks. Today, what is everybody talking about? What Vancouver is doing to lose.
Look, I get they were everybody’s pick to win in an assumed blowout after the San Jose series, but can’t anybody spare a little credit for what Boston is doing to win? F’rinstance, anybody seen the Sedins lately? I know I haven’t, not really. Some big Slovak guy keeps getting in the way.
Aaah… nope
Bad analogy by Milbury. Thelma and Louise were tough.
Be nice to Mnemosyne - she’s still trying to deal with the realization that her team (Canadiens, Canuckleheads, whatever) dive like Greg Louganis.
Wooooooooo Hooooooooooo! One more!
Out of idle curiousity, does anyone know the record for being outscored in the finals while winning? I’ve got the Canucks as down by eight goals.
I was wondering the exact same thing during today’s game.
Come on, Canucks!
Frankly, I have no idea who to root for. The Bruins, in the Orr and Esposito era, were my first favorite team. The Canucks have never won the Cup. I guess I’m just hoping for good, close, tight games. Three out of five so far.
You can’t root for the Canucks. They are the slimiest, dirtiest and most flopping team in the league. No team takes more cheap shots and no team complains more when they get called for something. So far they’ve illegally head hunted at least 2 opposing players and forced them to miss time. Nevermind the biting incident. Vancouver deserves to win a title eventually, but not with this collection of punks.
Well said.
