The Star Wars / Lego symbiosis

An interesting business story, but cool to see a life-sized Lego X-wing, too!: http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-05-23/life-size-x-wing-fighter-worlds-biggest-lego-model-lands-in-new-york

:: crickets ::

On the one hand, I’m always a bit disappointed to see huge Lego sculptures that are “pixellated”, just made out of rectangular bricks staggered appropriately. On the other hand, though, it’s way cool to see a Lego model that’s a scaled up Lego model, right down to the sculpted studs on top.

I thought maybe this was gonna be about the Lego Star Wars: Yoda Chronicles (that’s a lot to say). What’s up with that show/game/book? Is Lego Star Wars canon now?

Look at Youtube. Lego is used to model the craziest things.
The Siege of Leningrad in WWII – in Lego.
The Siege of Stalingrad – in Lego
Battle of Monte Cassino – in Lego
Lego zombie hunters

I am totally mystified why Hollywood hasn’t gone to 100% Lego-based film sets. They could save BILLIONS!

Thriller with Legos

Huh? What else could they be? If they aren’t made with normal bricks, what would be the point of making them Lego?

I prefer to see some use made out of the unusual shapes. There are roof pieces, and inverted roof pieces, and corner versions of both of those, in at least three different slopes, and cockpit pieces that match up with them, and wing pieces with diagonal edges, and pieces that can be fit into a 4-stud diameter cylinder, and so on. Then there’s tricks like flats hinged into place to make slopes, and gimmick pieces that happen to already be just the shape you need. Use some of those, and you can make much smoother and neater sculptures than you can with just pixellation.
