"The Statement" (Michael Caine film) *SPOILERS*

Saw this last night, and liked it quite a bit – hell of a cast, eh? Jeremy Northam and Tilda Swinton were amazing together.

One thing that wasn’t clear to me was why the church was protecting Pierre. My friend said it might have been because he was a member of the Chevaliers. Since the nature of the Chevaliers was never entirely made clear, despite Anne-Marie’s conversation with her Jesuit friend, I guess it’s plausible that he might have been a member before the war, which would be the only reason for shielding him and giving him money (!) after the war. Was he important enough before the war to have joined, given the high-powered nature of (apparently) most of the other members? Or did that high-poweredness develop after the war?

I guess since this is based on a true story, I should go look all this up myself – but, frankly, I wanted to start a thread in case anyone else has seen this film…
