The Stepford connection

What’s with the Stepford Wives references? A friend, in email, found something quite Stepford. In another thread, someone mentioned a person being Stepfordly happy.

Wha?

I’m not sure from your OP how much you know about it already. Have you heard of the film, “The Stepford Wives”?

I haven’t seen it myself, but the main gist is that the men in the town were replacing their wives with lifelike robots. The robots were programmed to act like perfect (from the male chauvanist POV) wives: always dutiful, obedient, attractive, sexually receptive and, above all, cheerful. The ‘wives’ were always walking around with vacant smiles on their faces.

I think most of the Stepford references either refer to someone being forced into artificial happiness (Disney employees), or someone who is happy by default, simply because there is no other brain activity going on.

Of course, I may have just missed the point of your question.

Hope this helps,

The Stepford Wives

BTW, it is based on a book by Ira Levin…the same guy who wrote Rosemary’s Baby.

I’d heard of the film but never knew what it was about. Perfect explaination. Thanks, all.

Manny, question asked and answered.
