What can I say, I hit their homecoming reunion show last night (postponed because of the blackout), and it was one of the best concert moments of my life, and I’ve seen a lot.
The Von Bondies started out the show, followed by Sonic Youth, who did a rather noisey but way cool set. All of that was forgotten when Jimmy Osterberg, looking pretty amazing for 56, took the stage with the Asheton brothers (Mike Watt on bass) and kicked into “Loose.”
DTE Music Theater (Pine Knob) security had their hands full with the 14,000 rather energetic (okay…insane) fans. One by one, people slipped by and managed to reach the stage. Somewhere around the 5th or 6th song, Iggy started screaming “Get up here…Let 'em up…” People started pouring onto the stage until it was jammed full of fans moshing around as the band kicked into “No Fun.” Iggy always seems to make a point that he’s not afraid of the fans, usually by taking over their mosh pit. Even at his age, he managed to get in quite a few stage dives. Traditional at Iggy shows, people started pelting the stage with whatever they could, although at $7 a piece, there was a lot less beer thrown than in the old days!
This show was nothing more than pure energy.
Just wanted to share that with any Stooges fans out there. You can read about it in the local paper here.
Sonic Youth, then the Stooges with Mike Watt on bass. If you used a host of scientific instruments, you could not design a show I would want to see more.
I’m usually bad at recalling the set lists, but it was all old Stooges and no solo Iggy.
I know I heard Loose, Dirt, TV Eye (friggin awesome), 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog (twice!), No Fun, Cool Time.
It was only about an hour long show, but any more would have been too much. There were a few songs noticably missing, mainly Search & Destroy, and Raw Power, but IIRC, Ron Asheton didn’t play on that album.
It looks like The Stooges will be at Roseland tomorrow, but it doesn’t seem like Sonic Youth will be there.
Mike Watt’s home page says that in addition to the New York show tonight they’re playing in Spain and France the second week in September. No word on any further shows. Let’s keep our fingers crossed, American dopers.
Well, Iggy was always “special” looking, so he didn’t have those pretty boy looks to lose. It’s like Keith Richards. He looks pretty much the same now as he did 30 years ago.
