So I buy a few of these little Stouffers 10 oz chicken pot pies on sale at the supermarket. After doing some yard work this afternoon I’m kind of hungry so I cook one up in the microwave and eat it all up. “Well that was quite tasty” I say to myself and think about getting another one, so I go to the fridge get it out and happen to glance at the nutrition panel on this little pot pie.
Calories 740 - Calories from fat 420
I look at it again to make sure I read it correctly. So to make this little pot pie tasty it was necessary to ladle in two or three heaping tablespoons of lard? It states directly on the label that this little 10 oz pie gives me 92% of my daily saturated fat allowance and 49% of my daily salt allowance.
I put it back in the freezer. These tasty treats are coronary death bombs.
Odd how food creeps up on people like that. I’ve had similar problems. I got that ceasar chicken wrap thingy at Taco Bell, figuring some lettuce and grilled chicken couldn’t be too bad for you… Went to the web site out of curiosity and found it has 55% of your daily fat in it. In one wrap! Makes me wonder if they couldn’t possibly make it a little healthier. I mean, I didn’t even taste that much dressing. Felt like I was eating a tortilla with some lettuce and the occasional chicken bit. What the hell are they putting in the dressing, lard?
Oh yes, the Stouffer’s Pot Pies! If the pie itself doesn’t give you a heart attack, reading about what you just ate surely will!
I bought some of these a few years ago - I travel a lot (hence my username), and I was looking for something to keep in the freezer other than Eggo’s and burritos. Fresh food tends to spoil while I’m gone for long stretches, so I was in the freezer section casually browsing.
Oh - pot pies! I haven’t had those since I was in college! Let’s grab a few! As I was putting the third one into my cart I happened to notice the nutrition info - OMG! I better limit myself to one a month!
If you want to have some REAL fun, pick up a Marie Callender’s Chicken Pot Pie and have a gander at THAT nutrition label! Even worse than Stouffer’s - I think that one version even has OVER 100% of the RDA of saturated fat!
A shame, because the things taste SO good for something that is so easy to make.
** Dutchboy,** I have microwaved several varieties of pot pies–if they specify on the label that they’re microwavable, that is. Some aren’t. But the ones that are do microwave fairly well, and in much less time than it takes in the regular oven. Just follow the instructions on the package for microwaving, although it might take a bit of adjusting on the cooking time. You can check it towards the end of the projected cook time.
I do agree ** Astro** those pot pies, as delicious as they are, are definitely cholesterol-laden bombs! As well as having too much sodium, which is really bad for folks with high blood pressure. I used to eat them for lunch at work, but lately have found myself eating more and more salad. Seems like the only “safe” foods for me are either fresh foods or something fixed by me.
Pretty much all pies are the same and are to be avoided.
As a general rule I usually look at how much fat is in a product per 100g and if it’s over 20g I try to avoid it. Also I compare the amount of fat to the protein content as well. The closer the protein is to the fat the better.
While we’re on the subject, have you ever had one of Marie Callender’s frozen cobblers? The first few years they were out, they didn’t have nutrition labels on them and I used to eat them fairly frequently. Then, of course, they added the label and I found out the only way I could eat one of those miniature pies and still maintain a balanced caloric and fat intake was to make sure I didn’t eat anything else over the next 36 hours. Needless to say, I don’t eat them any more.
Sometimes ignorance is bliss (even if it does wreck your health).
