The Strokes, The Hives, etc.....

I just started hearing these bands (yes, I know, they have been around for a while) and the one thing that I noticed was that they have some kind of fixation with the 80s, yet their music is anything but related to the 80s IMHO. Is this just an example of the 80’s becoming cool now, or am I missing some music from the 80s that I don’t know of? Also, when I started reading some stuff about them, and their influences, one thing I noticed was that Iggy Pop or The Kinks were not included as influential. Those bands are the first things that popped into my mind when I heard them? Could I just be wrong?

I will say this about The Jokes…I mean The Strokes. Nothing they are doing is new or interesting or groundbreaking in any way shape or form. As far as being this years “Saviors of rock n’ roll,” what exactly are they saving it from? Far as I can tell rock was doing mighty fine without them and hasn’t made any tremendous or even semi-tremendous leaps with them.

Oh, wait, I forget they’re from NYC, so they obviously must be groundbreaking and great & all the usual horseshit.

OH PLEASE.

“Don’t go away mad, just go away.”

It was?? I like the Strokes, and the Hives, (and the White Stripes) because they somehow manage to stick out from the great homogenous suckage that is modern rock radio. Better somebody that sounds like the Kinks than the 99th coming of Creed/StoneTemplePilots/PearlJam.

I don’t think much of the Strokes or the White Stripes, but I like the Hives. Still, I don’t think the Hives are exactly groundbreaking either. When I first heard them the Stooges came to mind.

Myrnalene hit the nail on the head.

It sad that when bands come around with a new take on an old genre, the old guard pops up to condemn it. The same thing happened with Greenday and The Offspring.

“That’s not punk!! The Dead Kennedys is punk. The Sex Pistols is punk”

Yeah but The Dead Kennedys and The Sex Pistols are all 50 years old now. I like new punk as much as I like old punk.

Except for Blink 182, of course. They suck.

Thank you very much for saying that. May I please add Stained to that list? I saw a new video today, and (gee golly, what a surprise) it sounded just like every other song they’ve performed.

I will state flat-out that I love The Strokes because of their fashion sense. I enjoy the songs, but seeing that lead dude strust around in his late 60s-early 70s Mick Jagger outfits makes me so happy. I want to dress like Mick Jagger!

It’s finally gotten to the point where I rearranged my car radio stations to all hip-hop, R&B and soul stations. I just can’t hear another goddamned Creed song. Blech.
