Has anyone else been turned on to this band? They’re from NYC and their debut album, “Is This It?” came out recently.
I had seen their name in a few music articles here and there, but hadn’t heard their stuff. Then, I heard them on, of all places, MTV. The reason I say “of all places” is because MTV isn’t the first thing that springs to mind when you hear them. And yet, there was their video “Last Nite,” marked “Buzzworthy,” to boot.
They’re a five-piece rock band who sound like they just stepped out of 1975. I guess you’d sort of call them pop-punk, but in a serious old school way, as in Stooges/Velvets/Heartbreakers/Television old school. There’s not a lot original about them, but they way they do what they do that’s fun; as the saying goes, “If you’re going to steal, steal from the best.”
I picked up the CD, and it’s darned good. Anyone else have it? Opinions? Thoughts?
I try and I try but I just don’t like em. I love Television etc but it just seems like The Strokes are copying on the bands you mentioned. I suppose they sound ok but just not for me.
They just got written up in the New York Times the other day. Or was it The New Yorker?
Anyway, the piece made them sound pretty pretty fun and interesting, musically. The lead guitarist/songwriter is the son of some media mogul, isn’t he? That was supposed to be one reason they weren’t getting points for “street cred”…they’re not just middle-class whiteboys, they’re UPPER-.
Considering you like the CD that much, I may go out and grab a copy. I’ll post my opinion if this thread keeps above water.
One of my friends who is really in to music digs The Strokes a lot. I think they’re OK, but I haven’t gone out and bought their CD or anything. When I commented on the video being on MTV, he said:
I do enjoy the song “Alone Together” a fair amount, though.
They all met at some boarding school in Switzerland or something.
I saw them live two weeks ago. Once the vinyl hits the cutout or used bins, I’ll pick it up.
They’re all right and all, but there are a half dozen bands in my town who do what they do and do it better. And this is Cincinnati. It was worth the ten bucks I paid, mostly because of the opening acts. And the girls who showed up. God, those girls who showed up. I need to get on MTV.
