Help me RIP this band apart! Or save them. Whatever.

O.K. Everyone!

Have you heard of the band called ‘the Strokes’? They have a song out called Last nite. It’s one of those Mtv worthy “buzz” songs. It’s actually a very good song. Kinda reminds me of the year 1982 for some reason. Maybe it’s the clothes they wear, maybe it’s the way they wear their hair. I dunno. NEwho, I like the song, but i’m betting this band, the Strokes, is going to be a one -maybe two- hit wonder. anyone wanna join me in saying this or would you like to stick up for them?

the strokes have been lumbered with the ‘next big thing’ tag, and it will surely kill them, as it has many bands before them.

but i really hope that it doesn’t - try and get a hold of ‘the modern age’ or ‘barely legal’ just as good as ‘last nite’.

i didn’t get it first - i thought - what’s the big deal? they’re just playing rock. very basic rock as well. but that’s the point, in these bizkit days, playing rock like it should be played makes for genius.

so i really hope they survive for the long term, but i’m afraid the NBT tag might cause them to have to at least take a big holiday, like at the drive in did.

I just downloaded and listened to this one song.

Kinda reminds me of early Beatles stuff, so definitely nothing new. I don’t think they’ll be the next big thing. I can see them releasing a few more popular songs, but I wouldn’t be suprised if we don’t hear from them much again.

Of course, I’ve just heard of them and only listened to this one song.

Yes, the NBT label will definitel kill them. They have some decent songs, but nothing I would describe as spectacular. I would actually probably enjoy them more if I hadn’t heard the press sing their praises so much, but my expectations were heightened beyond what they could deliver I think.

I agree about the NBT. They are a good band, but nobody could live up to as much hype as has been generated about them. There’s some big talk out there about this band, and it can only be a little bit justified

I do like their tendency to kiss each other in public. As a Rolling Stone article said about them, as far as they’re concerned “the more comfortable you are with your masculinity, the more tongue you slip.” Whatever, just don’t stop doing that!

Hmmm…as a person who finds PDA to be generally unacceptable (unless drunk), I can’t say that this new twist delights me…but hey, whatever floats your boat.

I bought their CD on the strength of “Last Nite,” and enjoyed it. I fear they will indeed be killed by the NBT label and their own hype, but I hope they will not. Sometimes it can spur an artist to grow and survive.

Good role model: Sheryl Crow

Bad role model: Spice who?

OK, the public kissing each other thing kinda creeps me out. Not that I mind guys kissing guys. But as a musician that bugs me. You just don’t make out with your own band members, same sex or not. That just smacks of Marilyn Manson, and where is he now?

Some guy over at the The New Republic (of all places!) totally rips them to pieces. He says they are basically a bunch of posers playing watered down punk to a bunch of models and others of the NY society elite and not the disenchanted kids and youth like other punk bands.

Wow, I read that, and I have to say this: The more I learn about this band the less I like them.

Although i do enjoy the Strokes…i say the Hives and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club do it MUCH better…
