A friend of my wife has a new one on me. Something about the how the slaves didn’t come from Africa, but were the Moors from southern Europe. I think the belief in hypnotic recovery of repressed memories did more damage than all the rest of these together (except for the witch trials) since it destroyed real families, led to putting innocent people in real prisons, etc. One of the foremost proponents of the theory is professor of psychology who has built their whole career about this wacky idea and been celebrated and won awards for it.
I don’t understand what you mean. Mesothelioma as a result of chronic asbestos exposure accounted for nearly 3,000 deaths per year in the US from 1999-2015, per this paper from the CDC: Malignant Mesothelioma Mortality—1999-2015. In the CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, March 3, 2017.
Overblown for most people worried about a stray fiber on the wind, sure. (Versus say, working in a shipyard cladding pipes with the crap, or at Johns Manville for 30 years) But I thought it was fairly well proven that asbestos has killed a whole lot of people.

There’s a new(ish) dam near my house whose construction was opposed by Basque separatists who suddenly decided to Go Green. One of their claims is that any seismic activity detected in the area is caused by the dam.

The guy I bought the house from mentioned his belief in that notion; I burst out “that’s untrue” and, since I’d already started, explained about the Iberian Peninsula being a really small tectonic plate that’s kind of squeezed between Europe and Africa and that you can see that in any map of tectonic plates. To his credit, he decided to check the information.
Note that diagnostic criteria has shifted in that same period; many people who under the old criteria were considered to have had a different type of cancer actually had mesothelioma, so between that and those who never got a diagnosis the actual numbers are higher (how much higher is what I don’t know).
