The stupidity of politics gets to me sometimes.

Romney’s food and toilet paper must also be business expenses (in his mind) because he probably thinks he literally shits gold.

Exactly. Quote after quote from Romney shows a man who sees everything from a business perspective, and doesn’t take into account the human element. His London Olympics gaffe and his Palestinian culture gaffe both fall into this category, not to mention his wife’s two Cadillacs. Barack Obama is far wealthier than the average American because of the royalties from his books. But somehow he manages not to sound like he thinks that everyone has book royalties coming in.

And Romney’s paraphrase around “I don’t know when the horse is performing, don’t really care, it’s my wife’s thing” really shows cough cough something.

Shit, who wouldn’t want to brag about being connected with the Olympics? And who doesn’t want to support the spouse?

He’s a weird rich dude running for President.

Depending on the individual, I am more inclined to place trust in a politician that already has money than the one who makes a pile a dough after he gets to Washington.

Is he even in London with his wife? I’ve seen news of her smiling and thrilled at how well her horse is doing. Haven’t seen him.

I guess politics will always focus on the trivial. It’s easier to talk about a rich guys hobby then substantive issues. I try to tune out the crap, but sometimes it does get to me.

As a person, I really emphasize with Ann Romney. As I mentioned in the OP, I worked with a lady battling MS. It had already taken her mobility, 80% of her sight, and even her hearing. I think the hearing loss was from complications related to her MS. I communicated with her using sign language. She read my sign with her hands. MS is a horrible disease for anyone to face. Ann has been really lucky that hers hasn’t progressed very fast. But, that could change at any time. She could go downhill really quick. I’m glad she’s got this time at the Olympics to enjoy and have fun.

Stop being silly - horses, dogs, cats, gerbils if there was such a thing as a champion gerbil are valuable because people desire to breed them with their animals, hence people buy them as investments which tends to be indicated by entering them in races, contests, shows and advertise them for breeding purposes.

Actually, my mom collected art glass, and was a registered business, because she also sold art glass that she purchased as an investment. So yes, she listed the cost of going to an auction, the price of the piece, and the cost of insurance and paid taxes on an inanimate object. I would assume that the owner of the store over in New London that has a wicked neat collection of SF/Fantasy/strange fennish tchatchekes classify stuff like a boba fett miniature as a business expense, and pay taxes on it when they finally sell the damned thing. They have to dedicate a portion of the sale price to paying the business expenses before they can decide what profit they ended up with after selling. That is how business works, you pay for something, sell it, pay the taxes you collected, a portion of the sales cost goes to pay rent, utilities and the wages of the slaves selling the stuff … :dubious:

I don’t like Ann Romney, but I certainly don’t begrudge her a good time with her horse.

What I do have a problem with, is her insistence that she doesn’t even feel rich, really (he he), and this horse is just supposed to help her with her illness. Which is nonsense. I’m sorry she has MS. But I have a lot more pity for the people with MS who lack all the resources she has.

I was never going to vote for Romney because of his politics. However, this incident tells me everything I need to know about the man. Until this point, I had at least a tiny bit of respect for him. He lost it there.

For the record, I told my wife that if she is ever participating in the Olympics, no matter how tangentially, I will shout it from the rooftops and wild dressage horses can’t keep me away.

An important principle of leadership is, “If it is important to you, it is important to me.” Dressage is important to his wife, his life partner, his most intimate friend, the mother of his children. Yet, he doesn’t give a damn. Asshole.

And don’t even bring up Clinton’s cheating on his wife. No, that isn’t a cool thing to do, but he still loves his wife. She is now the Secretary of State and, when you see them together, he looks incredibly proud.

You’d also think he would have at least given lip service to the fact that he’d really, really like to be there to cheer on the US team… but duty calls.

You don’t think she could have been umkay?
(sorry, I couldn’t resist)
