The Suicide Squad - 2021 version (open spoilers)

Hmmmmmm???

I kept expecting Spongebob to jump out.

My thought exactly. The starfish was silly.

In addition to Stallone, there were three other cross-over actors from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in The Suicide Squad.

Sean Gunn (as the Weasel and the Calendar Man)
Michael Rooker ( as Savant)
Pom Klementief (unamed dancer)

Also Nathan Fillion (who has had really obscure cameos in both Guardians of the Galaxy movies).

There’s also a “Crisp Ratt” mentioned in the credits.

Plus, Taika Waititi (as the original Ratcatcher) whose next Thor movie is going to feature most of the Guardians.

Seeing Peter Capaldi on-screen with a giant CGI starfish alien kind of reminds me of a not-so-great episode of Doctor Who.

The Guardians are in Thor 4? Wow, I had not heard that.

I thought Thor was in Guardians 3 actually…

That is how Endgame seemed to end, but with all the delays on Guardians 3 and the development of Thor 4, I thought perhaps that idea had been scrapped.

They should have just marketed the movie as “Suicide Squid”, and just left everyone scratching their heads until the movie came out…

I just finished streaming it. So good. Definitely best DC film since dark knight trilogy, maybe best of the whole genre DC or Marvel?

Only caveat (that makes me possibly put it behind dark knight trilogy or Thor Ragnarok) is the final boss fight lost it a little. Pretty much reverted to “super hero team fights giant bad guy” trope.

I anxiously await A Suicide Squad with Mister Mxyzptlk and the Living Lightbulb.

That isn’t saying a lot.

Were one to compare it to big budget modern comic book movies in general, it’s middle of the pack, certainly not as good as the very best Marvel stuff or “Into the Spider-Verse” (a Marvel, but not MCU, film.) It felt like Guardians of the Galaxy, unsurprisingly.

I’ve seen all the DC-universe movies and I would rank them like this.

  1. The Suicide Squad - 2021
  2. Wonder Woman
  3. Birds of Prey

:big gap:

  1. Man of Steel
  2. Shazam!
  3. Aquaman

:big gap:

  1. Suicide Squad - 2016
  2. Wonder Women 1984
  3. Justice League
  4. Batman V. Superman

I did not see the Snyder-cut Justice League.

I’d say it’s definitely up there. It’s significantly better than Gunn’s stuff in the MCU (I think as it let him go darker than MCU would let him get away with) and the guardians were some of the better MCU stuff for me. Not as good as Thor Ragnarok (absolutely the best of the bunch) but a step ahead of the Avengers/Ironman movies.

If not for the relatively weak final scene (which is still wayyy better than anything DC has done post Nolan and as good as most of the MCU) I’d say it would up there with Thor Ragnarok.

It’s like Justice League, but longer.

I’m glad to see someone else mention how great Thor 3 is. I think I’d put it up with the very best of all these DC or Marvel “universe” movies we’ve been getting since Iron Man came out in 2008.

I’ve liked Thor 3, Spider-man Homecoming, and Avengers: Endgame the best.

I’d rank it more around GotG 2 – was entertaining to watch in the moment but I don’t know if I’m ever going to intentionally watch it again. I could see myself actively selecting GotG to watch but not likely the sequel. If I was with someone though and they said they wanted to watch it, I wouldn’t try to talk them out of it.

I’m surprised to see that Birds of Prey is holding a 79/78 on RT. I remember it being pretty mediocre and rambling and finishing it with a “Meh” from my wife and I.

It was mediocre in some ways, but ambitious and cool in others. It was DIFFERENT, and I appreciate that.

I agree about GOG2, but then I feel that way about most Marvel movies. They’re entertaining, but afterwards I shrug and say “I’ll never watch that again.” A few - Iron Man, Thor Ragnarok, and Spider-Verse - stand out and I’ll watch them again. Some aren’t all that entertaining, like Age of Ultron or Captain Marvel. But most are just, yup, that was fun.
