The Super Bowl Commercial Thread

Best: The Chevy SSR commerical. I thought it was going to be one of those stupid “truth” ads when they showed the kids and the soap bars, but then that little boy blurted “holy sh…” Excellent.

Yuck yuck…worst commercial.

But am I the only one out there whose first thought on seeing the horse’s tail lift was Budweiser = Horse Piss??? Does Bud really want to be reminding us of this connection?

Yea, we were ROLLING. “Get me to the hospital, honey, I HAVE A BONER THAT JUST WON’T STOP!” Some people would pay good money for a pill that did that.

The American Chopper commercials were a hoot and I loved the Lay’s commercial with the old people fighting. I mean, old people and tripping jokes, now [Slappy Squirrel]THAT’s comedy!

Some of the beer commercials were good, too.

Put me down as average, I know who they are and I am a fan of their show.

The “young Jimi Hendrix” Pepsi commercial was great. Since you thought a spoiler box was necesary, I won’t spoil the fun for other “Dopers” either.

mobo - yes the Pepsi machine is in front of a store with an ELECTRIC guitar in the window (Fender Telecaster to be exact). You failed to mention that during the Pepsi/electric guitar scene, the original “Purple Haze” is being played. When they show the Coke machine outside the “other” store they play an accordian Polka version of “Purple Haze” implying that Pepsi is “hip”, etc. GREAT message to convey. Good commercial. I noticed this ad aired in the 4th quarter - the most exciting qtr of this SuperBowl and supposedly, when the ad rates were “cheap”. Pepsi got their money’s worth on that one !!!

Anyone know where I can catch the

I found the rest at iFilm. Can’t find the above. If there are others, not mentioned at iFIlm, those would be appreciated as well.

Don’t know if this is the one you’re looking for(I only watched about half of the Super Bowl before my Aunt called me to come fix her computer), but they’ve got an American Legacy Foundation ad up there now, Gyan.
As for me, so far the Budweiser donkey ad is my favorite.

I heard someone say that all the fans on the field were hired extras. I don’t know if that was just speculation, or if they knew for sure. But I’m pretty sure I saw some people with AOL 9.0 shirts on, so I wouldn’t be surprised. On preview, I realize that’s probably why you put quotes around “fans.” But anyway, it’s all just hype. I thought Kid Rock’s career was effectively over. I don’t understand him. Sorry, I’m rambling.

Anyway, I found most of the commercials this year to be quite disappointing. I missed a lot of them though, mostly in the third quarter. The crazy digital water effect was cool, but mere eye candy. I like a commercial with a punchline.

As I do every year, I watched the commercials and not the game. I think I’m somewhat average in that regard, and I’ve never heard of American Chopper. But I still thought the AOL commercials were sort of funny.

You missed the punch line:

“That was close”

I knew it was one of Jimi’s, but I didn’t know the name. I was going to write “a classic Hendrix tune,” but for some reason, I didn’t. But Hendrix on accordion! I love the accordion, but this alternate idea is just plain funny.

Congratulations to Anheuser-Busch, who once again won USA Today’s Ad Meter poll (in which people rated the commercials as they aired) for their ad featuring a dog with a rather unique way of getting Bud Lights.

Congratulations also to the winner of the Proctor and Gamble internal battle. P&G pitted all of its agencies and products against each other for a competition for their very first Super Bowl ad. The winner, in which the Charmin bear makes an “illegal substitution” of a QB’s towel which the other players can’t stop feeling the smoothness of, was pretty good.

Personally, my favorite was the Fed Ex commercial with the alien. As if the cardboard face trying to hide this huge hideous head wasn’t just funny enough, the little speaker box for the mouth was genuis. It’s all in the details.

Overall, I found the commercials very lacking and dissapointing. A lot of the Budwiezer ones were pretty funny (the feaux car commercial with the lizard, for example), but there was too much self serving “This Thursday on CBS” type ads as well. I liked the car commercial with the husband who was raised by wolves, but still…the “Undercover alien” spot was the best.

Well, my favorite was the stoic referee getting lambasted by a spittle spewing coach. Voiceover asks “how is he able to remain calm?” And then it cuts to him at home getting lambasted by a spittle spewing spouse.

Hmmm. I forgot what they were advertising though.

The Budweiser donkey was great. I wish they would have left on his hair extensions, though.

I also liked the FedEx alien, and the Staples commercial with the office supply mafia don.

Was anyone else startled by the opening of the Charmin commercial? I saw it and thought “What the hell is he doing to that guy’s ass?”

I loved the Budweiser donkey and the Fed Ex alien, but I thought the Jimi commercial was best, hands down. (And I’m a Coke drinker by choice!)

I was disappointed, though, that they didn’t do a whole series of them. Like a young Tiger Woods buying a Pepsi from in front of a golf store rather than crossing the street to the Coke machine in front of Jai Alai R’Us or something. Miniature Steven Spielberg in front of a movie theater rather than an accountant’s office, etc.

Overall, though, I thought the commercials were pretty lackluster. This may be the first year of my life where I watched more of the game than the commercials.

The most annoying thing Pepsi’s done this Bowl, in my opinion, is replace the original Sierra Mist announcer with a guy who sounds like Jon Lovitz. “One shockingly refreshing lemon-lime” doesn’t sound as good out of a high-pitched voice.

[QUOTE]

Pretty sure that’s David Spade (the annoying twit)

And what the hell is Century City??? Have they done all the possible combination of lawyer shows that now they have to do one set in the freakin’ future??? Who is the audience for this supposed to be???

Waddaya mean?? It’s a lawyer show (Are you sure? I thought it was supposed to be a CSI-type cop/investigator show. Anyway…) set IN THE FUTURE! Everything is made better when it’s set IN THE FUTURE! Just think, if they hadn’t decided that we needed a Flintstones set IN THE FUTURE, we would’ve never had the Jetsons!

IN THE FUTURE: The place to be!

[Criswell] We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives! [/Criswell]

I can’t wait until next year to see what kind of animal will be chomping down on some guy’s genitals. Last year it was a squirrel, I believe.

Didn’t anybody else like the chimp making moves on the girl while the guy was getting the beers?

“How do you feel about back hair?”

We all laughed at that one. But maybe because there were a lot of hairy guys in the room?

Ok, I need to know if that was *really * Wang Chung. Anyone? I was laughing so hard I can’t even recall what commercial that was.

Another vote for the donkey who wanted to be a Clydesdale.

And where can I get me one of them Willie Nelson talking dolls?

One of the ads I liked, although it was completly unsuccesful because of the reason, was the one with Sammy L. in a diner, eating pie, watching B-Ball. It was a CBS spot for March Madness, but all it made me want to do was eat pie and watch a Sammy L. Jackson movie. So, had they been selling either pie or Pulp Fiction, it would have been great.
Man, I soooo should be a commercial guy.
“What are we selling?”
“Pie.”
“Show Sammy L. eating pie.”
“What else we got?”
“Pepsi.”
“Sammy L. Drinking pepsi…while eating pie.”
