The Tallest Person You Know

I just got back from court and I ran into a friend of mine that I hadn’t seen in awhile. I’d also forgotten how odd it is to stand close to him - he’s over 7’ tall (I think he told me once he was 7’2" tall) and weighs in nearly 300 pounds.

Dave played basketball for UNC during the 70s and we used to play on an co-ed volleyball team (he played outside hitter). The setter for the team was a woman who was barely 5’ tall - it made for a funny combination to look at, but they really had to be careful because Sandi was almost always outside of Dave’s line of sight - had he fallen on her he could have killed her. He once threatened to put a bell on her so he’d know where she was.

So, who’s the tallest person you know?

Can’t come close to yours – mine is my BIL’s brother, who’s 6’7", and big. My BIL is a mere 6’4", and only weighs about 200 pounds, so he doesn’t loom nearly as much.

I have an uncle who is 6’5".
Lately I have been becoming acquainted with an awful lot of young women who are hovering around 6 feet.
As a female, I used to feel moderately tall at just under 5’7". These days I feel like a shorty.

I’m a mere 5’1" and my best female friend is six feet tall - I never think of her as particularly tall until she hugs me, at which point I find my nose smooshed between her breasts. I once dated a guy who was 6’9", and another who was 6’11", and yes, people made with the Mutt & Jeff jokes all the time.

Just last week, though, I was in a gas station and as I walked to the counter I noticed a very tall guy. It wasn’t until I got behind him in line that I realized HOW tall he was - the waistband of his jeans was level with my shoulder. I meant to watch when he left the store (they have one of those height thingies alongside the door) but I got distracted by the cashier and forgot to look.

I’m in a similar situation – five feet and one-eighth of an inch when the wind is right – and I also have a female friend who is just over six feet tall. People actually make us stand next to each other for pictures.

The tallest person I ever knew, though, was a friend’s boyfriend, at 6’8" and skinny as a rail. He used to hide stuff from me on top of cabinets and the like. I didn’t find most of it till I moved.

ME!!!
Ok, ok, my brother is an inch taller than me and I am 6’1". That’s right… long-legged Nordic princess here! An old ex-pal was taller by two inches but he’s an asshole so I don’t count him anymore. An old manager was about 6’8" but I’ve lost track of his whereabouts so beware!

I used to play golf with a guy that was a college basketball center. I believe he was 6’ 10". His clubs had extra long shafts and believe me with all that leverage he could knock the dog shit out of a golf ball.

My cousin, Doug. He’s 6’10". He has four brothers, the shortest of which is 6’. I am 5’10" and have a sister that stands 6’ in her bare feet.

We breed 'em big in my family.

That’d be me, at around 6’6", although a few people I know are pretty much the exact same height. There are a couple of taller people I’ve seen around uni, but I don’t know any of them by name.

PS I’m still growing, dammit! I want to make two metres.

If it wasn’t for the location, I would ask ‘Sacha, is that you?’.

Why do people make us do that?

Both of these apply to me, as one of the 6ft female friends. My brother is the tallest person I know, and he is 6ft 7ins. He has a penchant for small women though, and has never dated one taller than 5ft 2ins.

At a party in college (you know, those basement kegger type) that a a friend was throwing, I looked over the sea of people and saw someone literaly head and shoulders over the crowd.

I asked my friend “What’s that idiot doing standing on a chair in the middle of a party?”

My friend laughed “Oh that’s my friend Mark. He’s not on a chair”

He took me over and introduced me - 7’2"

We got to be pretty good friends, even though I always felt like his little idiot brother. Oddly, he did not play basketball and he actually got pretty sick of everyone asking him.

Haven’t really seen him in quite a while now though. So, I guess the tallest person I know now would be about 6’6".

My buddy from high school… 6’9", played basketball like a crazed lunatic with his big forehead and big crazy looking eyes and big crazy blond curly hair… I think his nickname on the court was “Big Bird”.

A criminal justice professor at the first college I worked at was 7-1. Like most of the tall people I know, he tired of being asked if he played basketball, even though he did play in college and professionally in Europe for a time, making enough money to pay for his graduate and Phd programs.

He also played in pick-up games with us at the school but usually didn’t bust out his ‘A’ game unless someone fouled him too hard, getting his dander up and basically giving the other team no chance at all.

I have two third-cousins, who are several years younger than me. They were both normal height when we were kids, but they moved out of town and I didn’t see them for several years. We saw them again when they were in high school–the fourteen year old was 6’4" and his seventeen year old brother was 7’2". The older kid had to special order shoes, because his feet were friggen’ enormous–like size 21 or something rediculous like that.
Their parents are both normal height and average build.

Sorry, but no Guiness record-holder candidates that I can nominate here.

My brother-in-law is the tallest at 6’6" (nearly 200 cm). Most everyone in my own family is short (I’m only 5’4"), so he tends to stand out when he attends family reunions.

My friend and roommate is 6’4". Some of my co-workers also clear the six-foot level.

I’m the tallest person I know, at 6’8". For a while, I thought my little brother might grow up to be taller, but he capped out at 6’6". Wussy!

A friend of mine is 6’ 1 1/2" (she emphasized the 1/2, last time I was talking with her). She has a large build, too, so she feels bigger than that.

A friend of my brother is about 6’8", also a fairly big build, and in the same age category. I have passed my friend’s contact info, with her permission, on to my brother’s friend. Hey, it’s worth a shot!

My cousin Nathan is 6’9" - last I heard, he may have grown. He plays professional -no. Not basketball. Volleyball. Last year was in Denmark, I believe this year it’s Belgium - not sure though.

I married into The Tallest Family in the World.

I’m 6’1 and I’m the shortest guy in the house when we visit.
My wife is 5’11" and is tied for the shortest member of her family. (They call her “Dinky”)

Her mother is 6’0".
Her father is 6’6".
Her brothers are 6’11" and 6’8".
Her sisters are 6’2", 6’1", and 5’11".

My daughter (turns 2 next month) is currently at 37", which (BROT*) would make her about 6’2" when she’s fully grown.

*BROT: By Rule of Thumb. (Double a child’s height at 2 years old to approximate their fully grown height.)

It’s nutty.

Had a good friend in college who was 7’1".

Apparently my great-grandfather was 7’. You’d never know it to look at me.
