The temperature is negative 7 °F, not minus 7 °F!

Am I the only one who is annoyed by this?

Of the two people in the thread so far, yes.

It’s too cold to be annoyed by that. Minus 40 degrees in some places!

I didn’t even know I was supposed to be annoyed by that. Is “minus 7 degrees” improper?

In a world of 7 billion people, I have to consider the possibility that there could be others.

I’d be more annoyed that it is that cold long before what anyone calls it.

Less people are annoyed than not annoyed.

I see that.

“minus 7” is a more technically correct answer to “What is 10-17?” than “negative 7”. I wouldn’t be annoyed by someone using “negative 7” though, as it’s a clearly understood turn of phrase.

I’m not annoyed by “minus 7”. But maybe I would be if the temperature were actually -7 F here.

I’m also not annoyed by the use of the word “less” rather than “fewer”.

I always thought they were interchangeable.

According to Google, one of the many definitions of negative is a noun meaning “a number less than zero.”

According to google one of the definitions of minus is an adjective meaning “(before a number) below zero; negative.”

So both still seem valid, but if anything minus seems more correct.

Your not?

You’re grammer seems to be worser then others.

Stop making minus comments about my grammer.

So are you saying that you are annoyed by people who say “The temperature is negative 7 °F, not minus 7 °F!”, or by people who say “minus” rather than “negative”?

Your OP could be clearerer.

I like 7 below. I mean, I don’t like 7 below. You know what I mean.

The minus/negative doesn’t bother me but I think I’d use ‘seven below,’ too.

Minus 7 is when we put away the parkas and start to consider jackets around here.

I see no reason why “minus seven” would be wrong. Even my talking home devices say “minus seven” (or, in today’s case, “minus twenty-one”) instead of “negative seven.” Maybe engineers talk like that or something, but the rest of English-speaking humans use either without a problem.

Is that Kelvin or Rankin?
