It has 5gb, but it may be more if you need source engine files too. So you’d be looking at a long term project.
Well. Sadly, my machine is not up to spec for Steam (Intel Macs only), so no cake for me.
iinm, you can register for the game first then download it years later when you have the system to run it. i think the games are yours for as long as steam itself is up and running.
I was amazed at how easily I beat this game. I’m not hard core gamer but it was fun and intuitive.
Ok I did cheat once on a really hard level. I don’t remember which one.
The first time I beat the game though there was either a glitch or I didn’t quite ‘win’. NO END CREDITS! I’ve been listening to the song for sometime now but never had played the game. So I had to do it again and this time…
Just to make sure, you didn’t finish the game at Lab 19, did you?
Just checking.
No I went on.
But I sort of dropped the last one just at the buzzer. So maybe it ended in a tie?
Revtim, I meant to thank you for this thread. I surprised my daughter with it, and the look on her face was priceless.
(Still Alive is my song!)
Awesome that it’s free. Unfortunately I can’t get into the game, it’s one big puzzle. Let me SHOOT something dammit!
Have you seen it sung by a children’s choir?
My pleasure!
I felt exactly the same way, and I always hated puzzles in the middle of a shooter. But Portal really grew on me.
There is no way that shooting bullets is more awesome than shooting portals. It goes against the fundamental physical laws of the universe.
Making this free was an awesome move. I’m downloading the Mac version even as I type this.
From the reviews I’ve read, Portal 2 sounds like a very different game, not just the addition of more labs to this one.
There are some unfriendly (but polite) machine-gun turrets in levels 15 (I think), 18, and 19, if you stick with it that long.
Well, I got my extremely cheap and game-phobic boss into this game.
He has a shiny new laptop and asked me about some games for it a few months ago. I suggested a few great ones, but you know, they all costed more than $0. He’s fairly cheap and suspicious of “internet transactions” so he never pulled the trigger on any of them.
I played Portal back when it was new; thought it was extremely smart and fairly amusing so when I saw they were giving it away I sent him a text - something like, “Look, this was probably the best PC game of 2007. It’s free for a short while. Fucking download it.”
Day 1 - Boss says to me, “I don’t even know what I’m doing! This game makes no sense!”
Day 2 - Boss, again: “OK, I made it through a few levels. I thought a woman was chasing me until I realized I was seeing myself.”
Day 3 - Boss: “I do like that it’s intellectual. There’s no blood or gore. You have to think to get through the levels. My kids like to watch, but they keep asking if I’m going to shoot a bad guy with my gun. It’s not a gun! It makes portals!”
Day 4 - Boss: "My wife saw me loading it up at 11:00 PM. She said, “You are not playing that game; you need to sleep. She was probably right. I played for a couple of hours and when I tried to sleep I just kept seeing portals and jumping through them.”
Me - “Yeah, there’s a psychological term for that. They named it the “Tetris Effect”.”
Boss - “Wow, yeah, when Tetris was released I played it to death and I always saw Tetris blocks when I was trying to fall asleep. Damn you.”
Me - “Has GladOS offered you cake yet?”
Boss - “What are you talking about?”
Me - “You’ll see.”
Day 5 - Boss: “She promised me cake.”
Me - chuckle - “That’s when shit starts to get devious”
Boss - “What?! Tell me more!”
Me - “Just keep playing”
Cool. I just signed up and put it in my library. From what you said, I take it I don’t actually have to download it. I may go ahead just in case, but since it wants to intall on my main partition, I don’t really want to leave it there.
I just finished Portal, and I have to say it was quite a fun game. But incredibly easy, for a puzzle-game. And the puzzly parts were even pretty easy for an FPS. I finished it in three sessions, none more than 3 hours long - if I had paid full price for it, I would have felt totally ripped off. I’ve been working my way through the bonus levels, and so far they don’t seem to be much tougher either.
Hopefully Portal 2 will have more content. I’m pretty sure I’ve spent more time beating Angry Birds than it took me to get through Portal.
Still Alive is a great song, though. After I finished the game I looked up the chords/lyrics and have been playing it all morning on my piano.
The thing to remember about Portal is that it wasn’t supposed to be a stand-alone game. They were releasing a bundle of games including the long-anticipated Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2, and threw in a couple of other little side projects just for the heck of it. They never realized that one of those little side projects would hit it so big. This is one reason I’m so excited about Portal 2, because now they do realize that they’re making a full-sized game.
I think you may need to download it before the free period is over.
I’m still fighting my way out of level 19. I have been getting stuck (even on much earlier levels) and then just get frustrated and quit, but I keep coming back. Steam tells me that I’ve played 13 hours and I’m still not finished – though I’ve got to believe that I’m “this” close. This was a fun game and worth way more than I paid for it. Thanks for posting the link!
Level 19?
Keep going…
