Sen. Hastert ** for advancing this opinion? Look, I don’t mind so much being manipulated by my government because when you get right down to it, leadership involves an element of manipulation. But it bothers me when people say stupid shit when they themselves are not really all that stupid. It bothers me because it leads me to the obvious conclusion that they believe I am stupid enough to buy it and come to the only rational conclusion: I must re-elect Bush in order to be safe.
Or how about Sen. Edwards for “When John Kerry is president of the United States, we will find al Qaeda where they are and crush them before they can do damage to the American people.” Classic retort. And completely transparent Bullshit. Are you sure you’re not really on George’s side? Methinks Kerry needs either to buy his boy a muzzle or do some flip-flopping on his VP choice. I’m open–I loathe the Democratic party as much as I do the Republicans, but less so. And I can keep my mouth shut when I have nothing intelligent to say in the presence of the media.
CNN, you representative rag of the liberal media (har!) for finding and publishing such a divisive nonstory. Jut gotta keep pumping out noise don’t cha! How about cutting your production in half and focusing on quality reporting of real events rather than playing Jerry Springer to the nation?
And of course, Inigo Montoya for getting offended despite the knowledge that all of the above is merely a game between the players, and that I am just a fan in the seats with no real bearing on the outcome.
Y’know, I can handle being called any variant of “stupid.” But it drives me nuts when someone tries to trick me and ignores the possibility that I might just know what they’re up to.
I wonder if there’s some kind of Republican version of “Duck, Duck, Goose” where every once in a while you get picked and you have to go in front of the camera’s and say something stupid. There was poor old Denny, taking a leak in the men’s room, when suddenly…The Tap. He looked down at his feet, knowing the scrap of toilet paper with his statement was already floating down like so much snow…time to bite the bullet old boy…
No not a predilection so say something stupid. It’s just a further demonstration that we have passed out of the silly season in this election and entered the hysterical season.
None the less, it makes a guy wonder if the GOP as now constituted is this desperate to retain power just what do they plan or hope to do with it. Power it is said is an aphrodisiac. Is it just lust we are dealing with or is there some agenda that is no immediately apparent?
But the assertion wasn’t that he would “stop terrorists,” which may or may not be possible through improved diplomacy and foreign policy.
The assertion was that he would, “find al Qaeda where they are and crush them,” which not only echoes the sabre rattling of our current president, it is also a ridiculous statement to make about a worldwide guerilla force which specializes in not being seen.
>> insert gratuitous Monty Python explosion here <<
There was an AQ group that endorsed Bush in a press release. IIRC this was after the Madrid bombing. They went on to basically say the truth, that Bush would be predictable and continue to wage war, which would get them tons of recruits.
To be fair to Kerry, if he were to personally use that as a campaign speech point, it could easily boomerang on him. Accusing your opponent of being “the terrorists’ choice” doesn’t look very presidential, which is why the Bush-Cheney folks have been using ABG (Anyone But George) to make the attack against Kerry.
