The Thing I Hate About The Straight Dope Message Board

Something has been bugging me for a really long time and I have to get if off my chest.

I’m an easygoing person, a get-along guy. I’m also an even-tempered, non-excitable person who wouldn’t dream of hamming it up like a drama queen just to discourage all opposition to my viewpoint. That said, I declare that we at the SDMB are witness to some of the worst examples of dishonesty, selfishness, and downright evil in all of human history.

The phenomenon is so widespread I hardly think it’s necessary to include links. We’ve all seen it happen. It starts with a simple disagreement. Someone disagrees especially strongly with the opinion of another poster, and questions whether such opinions should be allowed free expression in a community devoted to fighting ignorance. This inevitably precipitates the response that all opinions are welcome to be expressed, and if certain posters don’t like them, they’re free to ignore them or find another message board.

This is usually met with the counter-argument that, if a person believes that such opinions are dangerous and should be restricted, they should not be denied the right to express that belief, and if it makes others uncomfortable, they are free to disregard them and move on.

But are the rights of those who disagree with allowing such opinions free expression more important than the rights of those who hold that the belief that such opinions should be restricted must be supressed? I certainly don’t think so. Still, I must admit that it would be unjust to silence those who believe in banning the opinion that the belief that certain opinions should not be allowed, or at least confined to the appropriate forum. They are, after all, entitled to their opinions.

Then some asshole has to go and cross the line.

In oozes some drooling, obnoxious, goat-fellating, head-up-his-ass troll whose pathetic little life depends entirely on weighing in with his moronic, ill-informed, bigoted and thoroughly un-American opinion that the people of this message board don’t have the right to protect ourselves from the insidious bile spewed by those who would restrict the right of others to advocate the banning of speech related to the suppression of statements to the effect that the expression of certain opinions should be prohibited.

Don’t these fucking vermin have anything better to do? Are their lives that meaningless, that they have to shit all over interesting and engaging threads just to see their odious names on the screen? Ooh, big man! Posting your sub-moron opinions on a message board just to stir shit, that’s really brave. Meanwhile, these fuckers wouldn’t dare say anything like it to my face.

And to top it all off, I just know some oversensitive prick is going to come along and imply that I’m a fascist or something. I’m not. I just think that this community would be a lot better if we didn’t have to deal with certain beliefs that are obviously over-the-line crackpot paranoid lunacy, namely the delusion that the belief that the opinion that the expression of the idea that certain opinions should be suppressed needs to be restricted ought to be suppressed is something that people should be required to keep to themselves. It’s just not right. It’s a cancer that’s slowly draining the life out of this community, and it needs to stop.

That’s my opinion, and I won’t be silenced. If you don’t like it, go find another message board!

Huh?

Honey, put the twits on that “list that should not be named” ( you know, the ignore list)

And, huggles

I’m pretty sure he’s playing it for laughs. Right…?

So, let me get this straight, the opinion that the opinion that certain ideas should be supressed should not be supressed, but the opinion of the opinion that the opinion that certain ideas should be suppressed should not be suppressed is the thing taht should be suppressed?

I’m not calling you a hypocrit, but isn’t what you are calling for (the suppresion of a point of view differing from your own) the same thing you are railing against?

What do those of us do who are un-American?

If you think someone’s wrong, correct them,

If their opinion seems ill informed, educate them.

If they’re a jerk off ass wipe eye socket squinker, fuck 'em.
Hey, I don’t always agree with the main line, sometimes not even the mods. Does that mean I shouldn’t post here? Try and stop me! If I lose posting priviledges over violating board ettiquette, that’s one thing. To want to rid anyone because you don’t like their style or opinions is not your choice. Or mine.

I suggest fighting what you feel is important. The rest is out of your control.

Well said.

I love the smell of WHOOOSH in the morning.

Smells like . . . hushpuppies.

maybe it’s the alcohol talking, but I have no fucking clue what you are talking about.

Or puphushies.

We’re building the work camps as fast as we can! Sheesh, have some patience.

Yo, fight the power. When the troops come back we’ll search for those SDMB gulags, concentration camps, slave plantations, and torture chambers. If it wasn’t for the SDMB, World War II would never have happened. Where do I sign up?

I tried. I really did, but I’m not at all sure what you are trying to say.

Haj

Look, I have no problem with people who question whether the belief that the opinion that calling for the banning of the expression of certain opinions should be restricted, that’s not the issue here.

The thing that chaps my ass is people who want to restrict the rights of people who believe that those who hold the opinion that people who think that certain opinions should be banned need to keep their mouths shut from stating their opinions. People who think that need to shut the fuck up and let the decent, civilized people of this community have our discussions in peace. How can anybody argue with that?

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who didn’t get the OP either …

I was really hoping that we were being whoosed, but the OP’s second post says otherwise. Which leads me to ask

What the everloving fuck are you talking about?

If you really want to get your message across, I suggest transmitting it in a much clearer and comphrehensible way.

It almost seems as if you’re trying to make it confusing.

D’oh! That should be whooshed

Sorry.

Please don’t put me in one of those there camps!

:frowning:

Hell yeah!! All those ignorant fucks that…don’t…quite…know…what was the rant again??

Sorry, I was to busy trying to hate everybody all at once I think I got whooshed!

A person who has an obnoxious opinion that supercedes a previously obnoxious opinion should not be allowed to post another opinion which leaves the original opinion-maker angry and trying to defend his opponent’s sane opinion-- which may or not in actuality be totally insane, as well.

In other words, an insane post which is in response to a sane and/or insane post should not be given credit, and the poster should not be taken seriously, unless of course, the original poster, who posted a rational opinion to another rational-- although opposing-- opinion feels the need to acknowledge it. Which, if he were in his right mind to begin with, wouldn’t. Thus making the irrational posts appear to be rational, in order to make the assholes “siding” with the least popular of the two debated opinions conversely appear to be “siding” with the most popular of the two (or possibly three) debated opinions. So truly the rational posters appearing to be irrational for the sake of arguement would appear to be assholes, and in turn making the real assholes appear to be totally and completely insane.
YMMV.
