I see the odds have changed since then, but not by much. The spread is now 0. The Pack was 2 point favs over the Vikes as well, but that has also fallen to 0. I have 0 faith in the Packers this year so I combined the games as part of a parlay.
If the Eagles’ special teams are going to be that bad it doesn’t matter how good the receivers are. Merrill Reese (the Eagles’ radio announcer- I was at work last night) seemed to think that there would be massive improvement, but they got burned twice on kick returns and that’s not promising at all.
The other downside of last night’s opening domination: the offense got one series. That’s it. Hines is coming back so I’m sure it’ll be OK, but because of last night’s dominance on defense and special teams you can’t tell.
Wow. I wonder why you stopped at those stats? Perhaps because you knew any others would undermine your argument? Let’s not forget 15-1. That’s a pretty good stat, seeing as how no other rookie quarterback has done that. How about #3 in the league in yards per attempt, #7 in the league for completion percentage, or #8 in the league for passer ratings. You also don’t seem to be aware that the Steelers historically always run more than they pass. Nor do you seem to be aware that the Steelers were more often than not in a position in which they were trying to kill the clock because they were ahead at the end of the game most of the time. Hence, more frequent rushes.
Burress was the Steelers second or third best receiver. I don’t know how anyone looks at the stats and concludes that Burress was his favorite. He had 35 receptions to Ward’s 80.
This may be true, but I think Wilson is going to make a bigger impact than Burress ever did. Although we have an outstanding receiver corps, we lack in quality receivers with height, so we will have to see what the effect of this is.
Perhaps, but is your truck headed to the hall of fame?
Through week 8, his last start before being injured, he had four 100 yard games, including a 125 yard game against the Patriots. I don’t think his receiving yards compared.
Better than losing him to injury like we have for the past two seasons, and like the Chiefs will in 2005
I don’t discount the prediction that he will be back for the regular season, which will count.
Perhaps, but we do have a two time pro bowler in Troy Polamalu, and other than that, our secondary has stunk for many years. Losing Chad Scott is a good thing.
I’m not sure he’ll have to do much more than he did last year.
Oh…I’m sorry. What I meant to say was “Roethlisberger will throw for 237 touchdowns, no interceptions, 50,000+ yards and have a 158.3 passer rating this season. Looking at anything that may be construed as being slightly negative is the purest folly.”
Or, maybe I didn’t mention his achievements specifically because everyone already knows what he’s done. I was simply putting it in perspective.
As a Steeler fan I cannot stand by your numbers, BenR is good but not that good, I have to disagree with your 158.3 as being ridiculous, he will be a solid 158.2 due to that one incomplete pass he threw to himself 70 yards down field, hey he tripped. And omitting him scrambling for those 2500 yards was a shame as well.
Or being petulant and bitter? No, no. Perspective, that’s the ticket.
Of course, if this is your idea of “perspective”:
I’d love to see your version of “Nude Descending a Staircase.”
Look, there’s no doubt he benefitted greatly from having a great team around him, which is part of the reason why the Steelers will march to the Superbowl this year. But to try to discount what he did achieve is silly.
Oh, without a doubt, Big Ben was impressive. I first typed “by any measure”, but that wouldn’t be true. By the measure of yardage he was not impressive. That doesn’t detract in any way from his remarkable year.
I’m quite interested in the QB Class of '04, and will be watching them closely this year. I do hope (for obvious reasons) that they eventually outshine the QB Class of '83, though that’s quite a tall order. Can Big Ben, Manning, Rivers, and Losman go on to have collectively equal or better careers than Elway, Marino, and Kelly did? That’s a tall order, but not impossible. Especially considering the latter group only has 2 rings between them. That dig loses its luster when you consider the 8 (I think) Superbowl trips they made that didn’t result in rings.
Hmmm, that’s 10 Superbowls between them, in a span of 15 years. And they were all in the same conference! Is that right? (84, 86, 90, 91, 92, 93, 97, 98) I’m missing some for Elway; little help? (I thought he lost three.)
Let’s see, Miami lost in the '85 Super Bowl, Denver lost in '87,'88, and '90 (winning in '98 & '99) and of course the sad, sorry Bills, losers of four straight in '91-'94. So looks like you’re right, Ellis Dee. Elway lost three times. And he should have never won at all, if you ask me. Lousy stupid Broncos. Hey, did I mention I’m a Chiefs fan?
My problem with Bettis is that he used to play for the Rams. The Los Angeles Rams. Remember Natrone Means, Robert Smith and Garrison Hearst? Those guys came into the league at the same time as Bettis. The Steelers just can’t ask a guy in his 13th season to carry the load again this year. The way I hear it, he was promised a reduced role this year to get him to give it one last year. Sure he’s going to the Hall someday, but so is Thurman Thomas. Anyone want him on their team? And Duce, well Duce is Duce. Even Steelers fans seem to discount him.
Notwithstanding Roethlisberger’s Aerial Circus of West Pennsylvania (the Ravens only have Boller at QB you know) the Steelers are going to rely on the run a whole lot again this year.
They still should be one of the better teams in the AFC, but does anyone honestly think they will go 15-1 again? Look for them to take a step back this year.
I hesitate to do this considering the foam that’s already starting to form around the edges of certain orifices, but really? Cedrick Wilson, a bigger impact than Plaxico Burress? Think about the difference between offensive systems, and look at the production. I have the numbers right here - San Francisco threw the ball 25,630 times last season, and Wilson, playing a full season, still didn’t have a better year than Plax did in 11 games. And that was a great year for Wilson and a down year for Burress. I just don’t see how any facet of the Steelers’ offensive game isn’t going to be severely downgraded with the loss of Plaxico. Burress is probably one of the five most underrated players in the NFL right at this very minute, and, on a different note, Roethlissberger’s probably one of the five most overrated. Not that he’s not good, but people act like 15-1 was a direct reflection of how he played, and that’s not how it happened.
I’m a Browns fan, and since I am realistic I will only speak to the undue disrespect being given to the Vikings in this thread.
Moss caught fewer than 50 passes last year, and was nagged by an injury for a good portion of the season. Is he a great receiver? Yes. Can he be replaced? No. However, the Vikings are going to be a better team this year for the following reasons:
No more Moss to disrupt the clubhouse.
A healthy Michael Bennett.
A more balanced offense with the cry baby out of town, and four very capable pass catchers in Robinson, Burleson, newly acquired Travis Taylor, and Jermaine Wiggins at TE.
They now have Napoleon Harris, Fred Smoot, Darren Sharper, Sam Cowart, and Pat Williams on Defense.
Daunte Cullpepper is 50x better than any QB playing for the Steelers or the Ravens.
Good luck to all of you Steeler fans out there, but don’t cry when you lose twice to the Ravens this year, and once to the Bengals. Enjoy your two wins over my beloved Browns.
In other bitter news, any sideline reporter or booth commentator who TALKS OVER LIVE ACTION should be dragged onto the field and summarily executed as part of halftime entertainment. I don’t care who you’re interviewing, I don’t care if you wore a pink tie with your pink shirt, if the play is live, call the play. Go back to your inanity when they’re in the huddle.
But hey, at least the Vikings seem to be recovering despite their best efforts to lose the game via stupid fumbles and idiotic penalties.
If you happen to be a Miami fan, I have some bad news for you:
Your team SUCKS! 8 fumbles, 7 of which were lost? I betcha Big Ben and the gang don’t get that all year. You guys are in for a long and painful season. But I’m sure you already knew that.
Anyway, from what I saw (which wasn’t much, I was working) the Steelers looked pretty good for their second preseason game, although it was the 'Phins.
We didn’t get the Steelers’ game where I am currently staying. We had the Eagles and the Ravens instead. The Ravens did not look good for most of the first half. Boller was poorly protected and was hurried or sacked several times. The Eagles looked better than they did against the Steelers. I didn’t finish the game, so I don’t know how the second half shaped up.
