I just caught this on PT, it was a pretty good flick. Steve MacQueen was his usual cool, self-assured self.
Was the 1990’s remake any good?
Pretty good actually. Different from the original which was a smart idea - more of a retelling rather than a remake. Brosnan and Russo were very good as the leads. And Dennis Leary was surprisingly credible in a non-comedic role.
And you’ve probably noticed this is the wrong forum.
The chess game between McQueen and Dunaway was the best I have ever seen!
(And that makes this the right forum.

I actually liked the re-make better than the original.
I have been on the recieving end of an armed robbery. So, when Crown’s henchman shoots the bank guard, Crown loses my sympathy. In the re-make, the crime is an art heist, and nobody gets hurt. So I have a much easier time rooting for Crown.
And I like Rene Russo much better than Faye Dunaway.
Personally, I felt Leary stole the show in the remake. Other than Leary the remake was OK but lacked the style, intimacy and sweep the original had. I felt the remake went for kind of an imidiate gratification response that the original did not.
One thing I contend is that the unique camera work and cinematography of the original cannot truly be appreciated on the small screen. Personal opinion, of course.
I dunno about that; when I see Pierce Brosnan folding the $100 million painting, I know I cringe in pain.
Yeah, I never understood how that briefcase bit was supposed to work. Wasn’t the painting, even when removed from its display frame, still nailed or stapled to its backing wooden structural frame?
And as if that wasn’t enough, they then paint over it in water-soluble paint and have the whole thing hosed by triggering the fire alarm – and it’s as if there’s no damage being done to anything.
