Well crap, I don’t know why part of it got cut out, Trash is supposed to be under Real time Strategy and there was supposed to be a link with this under first person shooter:
Wikipedia list of free first person shooters. (couldn’t do better myself)
From here, the Ur-Quan Masters. It’s the classic game Star Control 2, from people who acquired the rights to the game but not the name, thus the title change.
Transcendence is pretty dang spiffy. It’s like a cross between Elite, Rogue (or Nethack if you like) and Star Control. You play a starship captain who collects and trades goods in a hostile universe. The universe is randomly generated, but the star systems are the same when you return to them. In fact, the AI will often stay busy in some star systems - you may return to one in the middle of a war for example. There’s a metric buttload of items and opponents in Transcendence, and quests too. The game is suitable for casual play, but can get fairly engrossing in classic RPG-style if you want it to. You can write mods for the game using a weird blend of XML and Scheme, if that’s your cup of tea. The only drawback is that it’s still in beta. The author said that he plans on it remaining freeware after 1.0.
I’ll also shill for Anacreon by the same author. It’s a turn-based strategy game where you try to conquor other worlds. It’s a more recent update of the old DOS game with the same name.
I’m also a huge fan of Simon Tatham’s puzzle collection. (He’s the anosmic programmer who brought us Putty.) They’re pretty old-school, but many of them can be pretty engrossing, and they play very well from a flash drive.
I’ve got to give a puff to Frets on Fire! Don’t have a PS2? Don’t have Guitar Hero? Don’t have a snotty, fake German lording his superior guitar skills over you?
I downloaded this a couple of days ago, seeing as I love Guitar Hero, but don’t own the game and can’t afford it, and wondered if you knew of a good place to get songs for it? I have only found one place (Keyboards on fire) that has some songs, but most of those are just the fret part, no actual music, and a lot of them are songs I don’t care for. I was hoping there was a site with a lot of songs available for download, but I also fear that it would be violating copyright law and hence the small number of songs available.
I forgot about Space Trader. It was originally for the Palm, but there’s a Windows version and Pocket PC Version too. It’s kind of like Elite, but not 3d. It’s also turn-based and very casual. I like it a lot.
I might as well mention Taipan for Windows, another Windows port of an old-school classic.
