The original Wells story doesn’t feature this, but if it had he probably would have chosen the book that outlined the penultimate theory of human society: Das Kapital
As for what books I’d choose, I’m not sure; the Eloi were so degenerate that they might not have really been Homo Sapiens any more than the Morlocks were. I’d have to see what they were capable of learning.
