The Top Four Foods for a Yummy Kitchen Smell

I have concluded that there are four foods, which if you’re cooking, guarantee that people will come into the kitchen and say, “mmmm! smells good!”

Those top four are:

  1. bacon

  2. onions

  3. butter

  4. coffee.

Yesterday, I had a trifecta: frying onions and bacons in butter, just as some guests arrived. They almost swooned.

I’d have to change a couple.

  1. Bacon
  2. Coffee
  3. Cinnamon Rolls
  4. Sugar Cookies
  1. Fresh bread
  2. Coffee
  3. Steamed rice
  4. Bacon

You forgot garlic & onions sweating in good olive oil.

I don’t put coffee in my potato soup. However, I do cook the bacon and onions in some butter. The recipe calls for it. I use a variation of this recipe. I don’t put in pepper, and I use chicken broth rather than vegetable broth. I don’t bother with buttermilk, I just use regular milk…and I shred a carrot into the soup, to give a bit of color and flavor. This involves three of the four smells, and I’ve been assured that it is a very yummy soup indeed.

During my brief stint in high end timeshare sales (hate me now) we baked chocolate chip cookies and mini cinnamon rolls (from commercial pre-made dough) in the model unit to entice people to feel “at home” there.

Sauteeing onions in butter. That’s the smell of my mom’s kitchen. When I walk into my parents’ house and I smell that, I know that everything is right in the world.
