The Top Witches

I’ll second Adalind.

No love for Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus?

Baba Yaga needs to be on this list or she will eat you.

Most fun rendition of “I Put a Spell on You,” since Screamin Jay Hawkins!

Couldnt agree more. Love her version.

This, but with the order reversed.

Mildred Hubble (nominally The Worst Witch, but I would argue one of the best);
Mrs Witch (a niche entry from UK children’s TV show Ben and Holly’s Magic Kingdom);
McWitch (an even more niche entry from 1970s UK children’s TV show Rentaghost).

I liked Madam Mim from Disney’s Sword in the Stone. She had a cool magic duel with Merlin where they both changed into animals. Mim would always turn into something ferocious like an alligator or tiger and Merlin would get befuddled and turn into a turtle or caterpillar. She finally became a dragon, thinking that would do it, so he changed into bacteria and gave her a cold.

For a collective nomination, the Witches of Karres.

Correct. Gives him some sort of prophecy then turns into a monster, and then he sets her on fire IIRC.

I have to give a nod to Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg; I wouldn’t care to have either think I wasn’t giving them proper respect. That said…

I like the version of them from the Gargoyles series, which explores their motivation for meddling with Macbeth (among others). Also, they manage to be creepy little girls as well as creepy old women.

I was going to say Sakamoto Mio, who can destroy alien ships with a sword and your mind with a laugh, but Hartmann’s a good choice, too. :smiley:

Yubaba, the main witch in Spirited Away

Baba Yagahas already been mentioned.

La Llorona (perhaps a ghost instead of a witch) also deserves mention.

I think witches in mass media are too white. Hope someone does something about it.

Sister? Wasn’t she a daughter? Even if she waren’t, I figure dere was a sister in there somewhere. Waren’t dere?

Well, now, what would you suggest that we could do about that? Huh?

Maybe I could go ahead and impregnate a black witch maybe? Do you figger that would have the desired effect what you wanted? I’m not sure that it would. However, maybe it could. What do you think?

I think the_diego might be referencing the current Oscars controversy.

Grandmama Addams - always a favorite

Nah, you need to see I Married a Witch.

jags is right. Veronica Lake made the best witch ever.

Granny Weatherwax > Nanny Ogg > Magrat Garlick > Perdita X

I have regretfully not found any of the Tiffany Aching novels here at the local bookstore. I REALLY need to get them ordered, as they are the only Discworld novels I haven’t yet read. I continually re-read all of the Sam Vimes books and the stories of the witches- I absolutely love Granny Weatherwax’s take on the world, and Nanny Ogg, as described, is absolutely, without-a-doubt my grandmother.
