It’s out…soon! In about 2 or 3 days from now (depending on timezone). I’ve got mine pre-ordered, and one of my gaming buddy has his copy too, so we’re just waiting for the download to unlock.
Anyone else waiting for it?

I *had been *definitely looking forward to it, but they really screwed up on their release times.
If this had come out before Diablo 3, I would have been on it like a… like a thing which is often found on another thing.
But Diablo 3 really scratched my itch, and when I get home today I’m going to play Borderlands, which is another “kill stuff and loot stuff” game.
Yeah Borderlands 2 is likely to consume my time. with FTL takign up my idle moments. I’ll pick it up, but probably closer to xmas.
It does look pretty cool though.
Thursday can’t get here fast enough. My buddy and I have both bought it. I read on the official forums that we can go ahead a pre-load it. I’ll try tonight.
Runic is giving away the official soundtrack here.
So I picked it up. Can’t wait to go home and play Borderlands 2, then Torchlight 2, then F1 2012, then FTL.
God damn it my wife is so going to divorce me.
I was playing it for about an hour, with an Outlander. Gosh, it’s hard to put it down.
For those who are wondering, here’s a very short list on how it is different from Diablo 3
[ul]
[li]I got an unique drop, the Three-Handed Sword, within half an hour of play. It’s just a level 3 item, but it’s quite exciting to get an unique just at the beginning![/li][li]Quests give you decent items for finishing them.[/li][li]All attributes have a primary and secondary usage. Strength increases damage for all weapons, not just melee (rather strange) and damage from criticals. Dexterity influences dodge, critical chance and recovery from fumble. Focus increases MP, damage for all elemental attacks and chance to use 2 weapons at once if you are dual wielding. Vitality increases HP and Block chance.[/li][li]I notice you can actually dodge attacks by moving out of the way at the last possible moment before the enemy’s blows connects. In D3, you can run miles away from an attack but you might still get hit.[/li][li]You got a pet which is a rather effective tank straight out from the game.[/li][li]Melee weapons attack in arc, i.e they do splash damage. 2-handed weapons have longer reach and larger area of effect (IMHO a bloody good idea)[/li][li]You need to put skill points into skills, but there isn’t a tree. It’s more like Mass Effect where skills unlock by levels (and have no other prerequisites). Each rank increases a skill’s effectiveness; there are three milestones for each skills which gives a big bonus to the skill.[/li][li]There’s a respec option that allow you to remove your last 3 allocated skill points. It’s available right out of the game. I haven’t find anything that revert spent stat points though.[/li][li]Speaking of which, you have 5 stat points to allocate at each level.[/li][li]Items have a level requirement and stats requirement. You just have to meet one of them.[/li][li]You have 10 skill hotkeys, plus a quick swap key that let you quickly swap between 2 skills.[/li][li]You can have 2 weapons set-up and swap between them[/li][li]Your Mana doesn’t regenerate as quickly as in D3, but a hell lot faster than in D2.[/li][li]Difficulty isn’t punishing but does require you to pay attention. Champion packs requires you to pay attention to their attack patterns. [/li][/ul]
Torchlight 2 is definitely less extravagant than Diablo 3. There aren’t voice overs for every single dialogue, for instance, and the interface doesn’t feel as responsively, especially when you swap out inventory items. The controls are smooth and responsive though.
There’s a demo on Steam. Still 3 (or 4, not sure how the counter rounds up) hours before BL2 unlocks for us Euro folk, might as well try it out.
I’m a sucker for dungeon crawlers, and enjoyed the original.
Ten critics have weighed in (game only came out yesterday) and it’s currently sitting at 91% on Metacritic.
Anybody playing? Anybody have it on their to play list?
Got it, installed it but between Borderlands 2 and FTL I haven’t fired it up yet. Looking forward to it though. Glad to hear it’s getting positive reviews.
I saw Kinthalis was playing it today - maybe he’ll drop by with some thoughts.
Aaaand there’s already a Torchlight II thread going.
Oops. Maybe a mod will merge the threads, have reported.
I was only able to play for a little over an hour last night, got through the first dungeon. I have to say I really like what I’m seeing. I chose an engineer and after my next level up I’m switching to cannons.
The comparisons to D3 are inevitable, many of which were summarized above. It’s not as dark and gloomy as D3, but that doesn’t bother me. I’ve never been the person that has to have the best most realistic graphics. The spell effects are incredible, though sometimes all the flashing colors get in the way of seeing what’s going on.
All in all I’ve really enjoyed it so far and wish my work day would end so I can get home and play some more.
Started a barbarian on veteran difficulty. The first game was a pushover on anything below hard. But I’ve managed to die several times.
I’m enjoying it a lot, but there’s already a few things I know are going to bug me:
I find selling items tedious. Same with going back to check shops to see if the stock has changed.
I’d rather only click on an enemy once and have my character keep attacking until I give another command.
ETA: I’m interested in playing co-op.
I’ve been playing a bit of this courtesy of a fit of generosity from Kinthalis. At first I was like, “ah yes, just as I remember, a cute version of Diablo.”
But then I taught my cat to summon a tiny skeleton warrior, and that was really awesome.
I’m playing the mage guy on veteran difficulty.
You can send your pet to town with your loot to sell. You can also give him a shopping list of potions and scrolls to buy.
pretty sure holding mouse button down keeps attacking
I’ve been doing that, but thanks for the tip anyway. It’s an improvement over having to go back myself, but I still would rather that the shopping game be eliminated. I haven’t found it amusing since Diablo.
I’ll try it, thanks.
I felt like I wasn’t doing very well as a melee specialist, so I started an engineer with a bird, taking Bulwark, Heavy Lifting, Blast Cannon, and one point in Healing Bot. I was doing a lot better-- didn’t die at all, rarely had to use a potion-- until I tried a phase door and got killed at least three times clearing it. Still doing a lot better than I was with the Barbarian.
I take back what I said about trying co-op. I’m watching kids a lot this week and can’t set aside time where I know I won’t have to leave the game without notice.
The loot makes the biggest difference between this game and Diablo 3. There’s a large variety of interesting affixes and effects that can spawn, include unique items that have chances of dropping meteors (a level 9 unique, at that). Itemization is looking to be stronger in Torchlight 2.
