Wonder who I will be voting for?
Well that would be a little less obscure if I had included my sig.
Two upsets so far, at least to me:
Honey Brown beating St. Pauli Girl.
Michelob Amber Bock beating Old Peculier
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Old Spew versus what might be the finest beer on the planet? WTF? There are more hops and malt in one Steam than an entire 12 pack of Spew.
It is somewhat silly putting Anchor Steam vs. the OM ain’t it? Gotta love the Anchor Steam.
Anyway, today marks the last match ofthe first round…the second round begins Monday…I’m hoping things could start to get close in some of these upcoming matches.
BTW, how sweet would it be if the Tournament of Beer was combined with NCAA March Madness? Picture this:
“It’s halftime here at the RCA Dome and we have Coach K with us…Coach K, try each of these beers and let us know which one you like better!”
“…He liked the Guinness folks! Guinness has just advanced to the Sweet Sixteen! Yeah baby!”
One of today’s matchups has Moosehead vs. Dos Equis. The picture shows the XX light in the green bottle. I feel this is an injustice to Dos Equis. If you are going to have a XX beer, then shouldn’t it be the best one they offer, the Dos Equis Dark?
The green bottle XX is piss water. The Dos Equis Dark is a good Vienna-style lager.
I must protest this matchup as unfair to the Mexican beer.
Your protest has been recorded Homebrew.
It was the first Dos Equis picture I found though.
The first matchups for the second round in the tournament of beer go up at noon today. These battles could get a little more dicey.
The Bar bracket:
I’m picking the winner of the matchup between Bass and Boddington’s. I think it will be Bass. The final will be a tough contest with Bass vs. Harp. Bass will come out on top.
The Pub:
This is a fairly wide open bracket with the surprise first round upset of St. Pauli Girl. I think the final will feature Sam Adams vs. Samuel Smith’s Taddy Porter. The Taddy Porter should win handily, but the judges have shown some flakiness (St. Pauli losing early) so it could go either way.
The Tavern:
Sierra Nevada should win easily in the final matchup with Newcastle. Sierra Nevada is one of the best breweries across all styles they make. This bracket features the worst seeding pick with Corona seeded #2. Luckily the judges quickly sent that piss-water packing.
The Ale House:
This is the toughest bracket in the tournament featuring three terrific competitors: Guiness, Red Hook and Anchor Steam. The final will feature Guiness vs the winner of the Red Hook and Anchor Steam matchup. I’m thinking Anchor Steam will win that battle by virtue of the tainting partnership between Red Hook and Anheiser Busch. Guiness, however, will beat whichever it faces.
The Semi-finals will then feature Sierra Nevada vs. Guiness and Bass vs Samuel Smith’s Toddy Porter.
Sierra Nevada is a great competitor, but I don’t think it can beat Guiness, one of the best beers in the world.
Bass is my sentimental favorite because it was the first non-American beer I ever tried. However, Porter is my favorite style and I would pick a Toddy Porter over a Bass. However, this is the pick I’m least sure of.
The final feature Guiness vs. Samuel Smith’s Toddy Porter.
The decision comes down to the judges. If the judges are considering Guiness from the tap vs Samuel Smith’s from the bottle, then Guiness wins easily.
On tap vs on tap, I am loathe to make the call. I really want Samuel Smith’s to win, but I think Guiness will pull it out.
(Can you tell from all this that I like dark ale’s best?)
I, too, like the dark beers…and I’d have to say Guinness has to be the odds on favorite at this point. Bass is my favorite brew, though…I absolutely love that stuff. Sierra Nevada is fantastic as well.
Homebrew, it’s Guinness, not Guiness! You need to e-mail Tuba immediately and change your username to Milwaukee’s Best.
Guinness will probably win as the sentimental favorite. And I’ve never visited the Guinness mecca in Ireland although every raves about how superlative Guinness is on it’s home turf.
I like a Guinness on occaision, and even more than one. But IMHO it would not win a “stranded on a desert island and can only drink one type of beer for the rest of your life.”
Just a suggestion, maybe next contest would be the above stranded.
A well deserved comment. I also called Samuel Smith’s “Toddy” instead of “Taddy”. Damn I wish I could edit to correct these mistakes and deny they ever happened.
I’m so embarassed.:o
perhaps that will be our next pool. Man, I wish I had thought of that. Thanks!
I’ve got to agree with the first part here. Then again seeding is kinda tough.
Gotta disagree with Easy E here though-Leinies Honey Weiss is their best one, should be here. Maybe next year.
Nice site though…it’s scary how many of those I’ve had.
We’ve got two dead heats goin on right now, with just half an hour left in the voting! This could be a tight finish to the week!

I just voted in today’s matchup and I must say I was shocked… SHOCKED, I tell ya by the running tally I got in response:
Samuel Smith’s should be running away with this one! This is an outrage!
Then more shocking results in the other race where Coors Extra Gold is trouncing Harp!
I gotta say, TMax, you might have to institute some means to determine whether judges are actually qualified to give their opinion.
There’s no way Amstel Light should be hanging with Sam Smith. And I think the fact that Coors Extra Gold is giving Harp a run for its money may be even worse! It’s disappointing to say the least. Who could possible drink amstel light or coors over these two fine brews?
Where did all these judges come from? I remember a few weeks ago when contests were won 11-4. The Harp contest had nearly 100 voters!
Blue all the way to the finals!!! WWWOOOOHHHHOOOOO:D
