Beer Madness 2008

Enough with the music, let’s have a beer. Yes, it’s Beer Madness. Same rules as the others. The beers chosen were based on the best selling beers in the U.S. If you favorite isn’t listed, you didn’t buy enough for it to be a best seller. I debated whether to combine all brands and have a free for all tourney or break them down into specific categories. I decided to use categories, Best Sellers, Bargain Basement, Imports, and Craft/Microbrews. Ratings for each group were based using a random number generator. Round 1 will run till Thursday, May 1 at 6 am Pacific time. Ladies and Gentlemen, belly up to the bar and make you choices.

Are you suggesting that I try each of these beers and still have sufficient eye-hand coordination to make a post to this message board?

I’m not sure what it says about me that I have tried almost all of these brews…

Stegmaier is a microbrew or craft beer? We used to get it for $5 a case in the '80s. Sometimes the lables were upside down and it only came in loose cases, not even 6-packs.

Notes:

Never had Henry Weinhard’s, but it has to be better than that nasty PBR.

Several matchups where I’ve never had either, so I went by such criteria as reputation and commercials (some ads fondly remembered, some so annoying as to cost the brew they attempted to promote).

Of the choices listed, Guinness is my hope to win it all!

I must say that when the import subdivision has 4 Mexican and 3 Canadian beers and only 1 Irish one, something is seriously wrong.

Now HERE’s a Madness I’m motivated to participate in!!!

Best Sellers.

  1. Miller Genuine Draft vs. 16 Busch MGD = piss
  2. Henry Weinhard’s vs. 15 Pabst Blue Ribbon
Perhaps the toughest matchup of the first round, but I grew up in Oregon, so Henry’s figures in many of my fondest underage drinking memories
  3. **Michelob ** vs. 14 Coors Light No votes for anything Coors or anything “Light” from this quarter!
  4. Rolling Rock vs. 13 Michelob Light mmm…glass lined vats
  5. **Michelob ** vs. 12 Busch Light
  6. Budweiser vs. 11 Yuengling Never heard of Yuengling.
  7. Miller Light vs. 10 Bud Light Is death an option?
  8. Coors vs. 9 Iron City Go Steelers! Though my Dad always said it gave him diarrhea…I guess being called a “diaper dandy” is not a positive thing in this tournament…

Bargain Basement
Mostly I will just be going for the cool sounding old Midwestern man sounding names here…

  1. Schmidt vs. 16 Pearl Never heard of either
  2. National vs. 15 Keystone Light
  3. Natural Light vs. 14 **Hamm’s ** The beer refreshing!
  4. Blatz vs. 13 Rainier Actually a tough call, with NW loyalty forcing me to bid a fond farewell to the most onopotameneic of all beers.
  5. Keystone vs. 12 **Stroh’s **
  6. Red Dog vs. 11 Schafer
  7. Lone Star vs. 10 Olympia
  8. Old Milwaukee vs. 9 Killian’s Irish Red

  7. **Tecate ** vs. 10 Molson Canadien
  8. Guinness vs. 9 Corona A strong pick to Go! All! The! Way!

Craft/Microbrews

  1. Widmer Hefenweizen vs. 16 Stegmaier I wish I had one now…crisp, refreshing, and weak enough to drink at work at 10 AM. Right, boss?
  2. Shiner Bock vs. 15 Red Tail Ale
  3. Alaskan Pale Ale vs. 14 Leinenkugel
  4. **Blue Moon Belgium White ** vs. 13 Full Sail Amber Ale
  5. New Belgium Fat Tire vs. 12 Harpoon IPA
  6. Pyramid Hefenweizen vs. 11 Saranac BTW, I don’t think Hefeweizen has an n.
  7. Redhook ESB vs. 10 Anchor Steam Ale Oh, THIS is the tough call of the first round. Not sure if you mean Anchor Steam Beer or Anchor Liberty Ale, but it either case it barely squeaks by Redhook.
