The Towers of Light are so impossibly beautiful

I left my gym tonight at about 7:15…I was walking west on 14th, and as I crossed Sixth Avenue I looked south, just out of habit, checking for wrong-way bicycles or skateboarders.

There they were. So extraordinarily beautiful. Ghostly perfection.

I’d known that they would be lit tonight. But I wasn’t expecting to be able to see them, on such a cold, clear day.

I stopped, my breath taken away. So did others.

I gulped a sob and walked on to Seventh. There, six months ago, I had watched the towers burn.

I called my friend Jay, to tell him to go look when he could.

A light unto the heavens. How right.

I watched the turning on of the lights on a live feed and found the ceremony itself haunting.

The commentator said the lights go a mile up and can be seen for 20 miles around the WTC site and that they will be turned on each night until April 13.

They sure look stunning on TV.

(oh yeah, and I did cry)

Why April 13th? That seems like such a random date. I only watched long enough to see the lights turn on and then I left the room when that awful singer started butchering “America the Beautiful” but I was under the impression that they would stay on until something else was put there.

Apparently April 13 is the date a temporary memorial will be in place (apart from the current sphere) - that’s what the commentary said.

I thought Jessye Norman butchered ATB, too.

I fly back into NYC tomorrow night–I’ve been visiting the folks in San Francisco for a bit. I’ll keep my eyes open as we make the approach.

Frankly, I’ve been kinda dreading them. I can’t quite put my finger on why, aside from maybe that they’ll blot out the two remaining stars you can see at night from the NYC metro area. But if y’all say they’re worth seeing, I’ll do my best to give them a fair shot.

(And hey! The boards are back! Yay!)

Not to hijack, but one question from a guy from Jersey . . .

Are they going to keep some sort of observation section open at Ground Zero? Reason I ask, is that I had just gotten into Kuwait when everything happened, and my Congresswoman sent me a flag. I wanted to ‘fly’ my flag at Ground Zero. . .

Tripler
It would mean more to me than you know. . .

Now I must see this light in person! Yes, I may be part moth… But seriously, from the few shots on tv & elsewhere, it is compelling.

It’s a shame this has become a matter of contention, but I can understand both sides. Yet, to my non-American eyes, the Towers of Light are beautiful, haunting, and healing.

Just from the photo on the front of my morning paper, they look beautiful.

I hope they’re still on when I’m up there in August.

I wonder if I’ll be able to see it from my apartment. I know I would on my way home, but, unfortunately, it’s too early in the day for them to be seen. Maybe Wednesday when I’m in the city later. Will it choke me up, like it did Oxy? Probably. But from what y’all say, it’s worth it.

Trip, I’ll see if I can check into that for you. It’s a more than worthy reason.

I wish so hard that could go to New York and see them.
