The tree limb

So I was at the kitchen about to do dishes when I looked out the window into the family’s back yard and I see something unexpected. A whole bunch of tree limbs. We had a decent storm last night so I wasn’t too surprised, though the size and number was rather impressive.

I head out back to investigate and I spot a rather disturbing sight. It isn’t a bunch of branches knocked out of the tree. It’s one long limb that broke, I assume during the storm. The limb is probably sixty feet long with a fork maybe fifteen feet in. It’s big.

Had it hit the house, it would have done major damage.

The limb did do some damage to the pool screen in my neighbor’s yard, I took pictures and even a short video. Yay youtube! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vya68iVukmA – I’m the narrator you hear.

I told dad, and as expected, the string of obscenities - were I to lay them end to end, would be just as long as the tree limb.

I’ve got three tree services coming to give me estimates, we’ll see what the cost is. As I understand it, it’ll come out of the landlord’s pocket. In theory.

So — I guess you’re not in woodstove territory? That there’s firewood on the hoof. Plus, it’s a good excuse to buy a chain saw. Although a job that size, you could do with a bow saw and some time.

Had the same thing happen to one of my maples a few years back. Most of it went into the woodstove and the tree is slowly growing back so it doesn’t look so lopsided.

Your neighbor will need to put up some temporary fencing until he can have his pool screen permanently repaired or replaced. If a hapless cow or elephant should wander that way, it could be in trouble.
