The Trump Administration: The Clusterfuck Continues (Part 1)

Totally. I’m trying to remember (ha!) where I read about this - mixing up words from common stock phrases. It might have been in an Oliver Sacks essay/story.

I had to go listen to this to see if there was a “-ry” there or if he’d inadvertently said something unfortunate again. It’s sort of there.

It’s not a speech it’s some vaguely entertaining ineloquent guy rambling about stuff. It conveys confidence and the common touch.

His popularity is in no small part an understandable reaction against politicians who sound as polished and perfect and bland as the copy found in glossy brochures for pension plans.

Shame he’s such an incompetent evil self serving corrupt asshole.

I never thought he was over-reactiing. In fact, I thought he should have gotten as much of his family as possible out of the country. And he probably still should. Trump still has years to go, and ignoring a pardon would just be his next step downwards.

So, I take it you’ve never actually sat through more than a minute or two of them?

Many of his speeches are actually rather long-winded, rambling, and not entertaining. Sure, a few likely soundbites, which is most of what gets reported, and otherwise really boring.

Even his supporters tend to drown him out and leave after a while. They come for the one or two moments when he breaks out a demeaning nickname or sets up an obvious chant. They’re pretty bored the rest of the time. Not that they would admit it (other than by leaving early, as many do).

It also leads to some of his odd pauses when he gives speeches to less friendly crowds or at events in other countries (like his recent UK trip or his address to the generals). He makes a soundbite-able quip, expects applause, and gets nothing. And he looks vaguely confused by it - he actually believes he’s some great orator that can work any crowd.

It’s a shame that not every American has a human parent to teach them that trusting a guy who refers to himself in the 3rd person and reflexively bleats, ‘Believe me’ whenever he lies is strictly for Marks, Suckers, and Chumps.

That was beautiful/hilarious/horrifying.

What dafuk WAS that? What was he talking about?

I feel dumber than I did before I watched it.

I thought of Kirk in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, where the Enterprise crew goes back to 1980s San Francisco. He tries to use a period-appropriate insult, after someone calls him a dumbass, and winds up saying, “double dumbass on you!”

I’m reminded of something I read in a news article in his first administration; that he was a severe challenge for translators, because he simply doesn’t make sense much of the time. This is even worse for translators than for other people because other languages of course don’t have a one-for-one correlation to English, so translating it properly requires converting the English original into something that matches the meaning of the English passage.

That tends to work badly with Trump since his meaning it incomprehensible much of the time. So translators have the choice of guessing, or just literally replacing English words with the destination language equivalent. Which is Google Translate levels of bad translation.

First: you underestimate translators. We are more ressourceful than you give us credit for.
Second: The correct term is interpreters, not translators.

But how do you translate “Covfefe”?

Cagonlahostia.

(That translates as “I shit on the communion wafer”, a common (in Spain) Spanish interjection)

There should be hazard pay and/or “counselors are standing by” arrangements. Rendering (and I do mean “rendering”) trumpspeak into normal human sentences expressing normal human thoughts could result in brain damage to the person charged with this responsibility. Trump, of course, already suffers from brain [sic] damage. Or at least damage to the stuff inside his head.

[Re Biden pre-emptively pardoning family and others:]

Yep, anyone who thought he was overreacting wasn’t paying attention. At all.

Ignoring a pardon from a previous president would mean his successors could ignore his pardons. He doesn’t want that, especially if he gives himself a pardon. Which is why they’re trying to get Biden’s pardons ruled invalid due to the autopen thing.

Well, he doesn’t think there will be “successors”, so that’s a non-issue. And if someone points that out to him, he knows that the Democrats probably won’t have the will to do the same thing. They’ll want to “get back to normal”, and a tit-for-tat pardon war won’t make that easy.

“You can’t go through 50 states. You have to get one approval. 50 is a disaster. Because you’ll have one woke state and you’ll have to do all woke. You’ll be back in the woke business. We don’t have woke anymore in this country. It’s virtually illegal. You’ll have a couple of wokesters"

“If they buy a nice Tesla car and they borrow the money – you’re so lucky I’m with you, Elon. I’ll tell you. Has he ever thanked me properly?”

“We became the king of ventilators. What a period of time that was for all of us. It was an amazing time.”

“I met with two pollsters the day before I got the news about covid because we were starting to think about the next election. They said, ‘Sir, if George Washington and Abraham Lincoln came back from the dead and they aligned, you’d be beating them by 25 points.’”

“I’m all for climate change”

Well, that much we knew.
