The Trump Campaign Promise Walk-Back Thread

Yes, but the executive can only use existing resources, he can’t create his own enforcement unit and fund it.

Besides, we have a deportation force, it’s called ICE. And Republicans will almost certainly increase funding and personnel for ICE, so we will likely see a somewhat higher rate of deportations.

I feel like we are saying the same thing.

OK, then lets make a deal. Build yer stinkin’ wall, mazel tov, much good may it do you. In return, let the people who are here stay. Provisional legality that is not citizenship. They can’t vote, but otherwise, they are just as good as anyone else. And their children are citizens, just as good as anyone else.

Deal?

He should talk to Trump then.

In an interview tonight, he’s going to announce that 2-3 million will be rounded up and deported or imprisoned starting in January. Only the criminals apparently, despite the fact that there aren’t nearly that number of criminal undocumented immigrants in the country.

He didn’t mean any of the shit he promised, but now he’s going to have to stick with it. This is going to be a bumpy ride, and I apologize to anyone to whom I was condescending toward regarding prepping for an apocalypse.

Well, he’s going to have to walk back “drain the swamp” now that he’s officially appointing Priebus as his chief of staff. Don’t get much more Washington insider than that.

He’s made impossible promises that people expect him to keep, and if he keeps them, he runs the country into the ground. The promises are logistically impossible, and he isn’t able to use “insiders” (aka people who actually know how to do these things) to get things done because he promised not to.

Nobody in the history of mankind has been more over their head in an impossible situation than this. This is not hyperbole.

Also, is there anyone happier than John Boehner right now?

I hear Bannon “The Pork Cannon” gonna be Special Counsel for Strategy. Guess I will have to actually pay attention to Breitbart, they might actually have some inside dope!

Years ago, I talked to a Zoo employee at the local bar. He was filling out a form for the government’s count of Endangered Snapping Turtles. (This was before data were submitted electronically.) So, I asked, how do you count snapping turtles? We drain the alligator pond, he said. That’s when we count all the various critters living there.

Of course, it’s been noted by many that McConnell looks like a snapping turtle. Trump will depend on the gators, too. Might a few water moccasins be included?

Also remembering the famous swamp denizen who noted “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

You’ll sign on for an effort to hinder future lawbreakers, but only if we give a pass to current lawbreakers? That – doesn’t sound like a great deal, to be honest.

I didn’t see if this was linked here?

Donald Trump, in Exclusive Interview, Tells WSJ He Is Willing to Keep Parts of Obama Health Law

Some selected quotes:

  • Mr. Trump said he favors keeping the prohibition against insurers denying coverage because of patients’ existing conditions, and a provision that allows parents to provide years of additional coverage for children on their insurance policies.

  • On health care, Mr. Trump said a big reason for his shift from his call for an all-out repeal was the meeting at the White House with Mr. Obama, who, he said, suggested areas of the Affordable Care Act, widely known as Obamacare, to preserve.

  • He said he would create jobs through nationwide infrastructure projects and improved international trade deals.

  • …Mr. Trump said he is placing a high priority on bringing the country together. “I want a country that loves each other,” Mr. Trump said. “I want to stress that.” He said the best way to ease tension would be to “bring in jobs.” Asked whether he thought his rhetoric had gone too far in the campaign, Mr. Trump responded: “No. I won.”

You can’t keep the stuff he wants to keep without the other stuff. That was the whole point of the other stuff.

The 60 Minutes interview seemed like a series of walk backs.

(paraphrasing) “Yeah, a fence might be OK in places,”

My emphasis.

TL;DR

I really think the GOP/Tea Party (they aren’t all that different these days) really want Pence as Prez - the promised floor fight did not appear; the Never Trumpers were content with a “vote your conscious” in a Prime Time speech.
My guess is that Pence as VP was the price of that deal.

The GOP can Impeach and Convict with just a few Dems siding with them.
I suspect they intend to give Trump his head for about 2 months, then start telling him how/what to do.
Finally, they will discover “Gasp! Horrors! Corruption!” or any other pretense to fire him and get True Believer Pence - who understands how to get things done.

How long it takes Trump to realize that the con man has been played for a fool is anybody’s guess - but it will be interesting to see how much leverage the Dems can get:
“You like being President? Let’s talk about that…”.

I . . . believe I’m done underestimating Donald Trump.

GOP President-Elect Donald Trump Says Same-Sex Marriage Is ‘Settled’ Law

The man sounds almost…rational!

Yeah Yeah but, had he ever said he was opposed? Giving him credit for being rational on an issue he has never opposed seems…Not right. Like it’s a distraction.

So, the man is a genius! He has finally managed to unite the GOP and Democrats! It took someone this loathsome for them to come together.

How much will it cost the taxpayers to secure Trump Tower in the middle of Manhattan? I assume he lives in a penthouse with a helipad, so at least he won’t have to step out onto a Manhattan sidewalk, but even so, it would seem like they would have to disallow traffic for at least the immediate block around it.

And what about other tenants?
