The Trump deportation news thread

Ok, you know what was meant. But you answered my question anyway. You don’t have to worry about it then

My boss, head of the immigration practice at the Chicago law firm where I work, reported being called into an emergency internal meeting to discuss the constitutional issues involved if the Feds decide to go after state and local government officials who refuse to cooperate with ICE. Not sure exactly what the end result was.

I sent a message to one of my FB friends. When I moved up here ‘Felipe’ left a card on my door, offering lawn-mowing services. None of the ‘American’ companies reached out. Felipe has done exemplary work for is… as did his brother "Daniel’, who has done construction work on our house. Felipe says he and his brother are doing well, and he thanked me for my concern. We need people like this in our country. I really hate the 1930s Germany situation we’re in now.

I am curious what the legal implications are. It seems clear cut that a local official is not obligated to cooperate.

A friend posed a screenshot of a Bluesky post:

Fiance reports that ICE trying to board a bus in Seattle were refused by a Seattle bus driver who told them “gargle my balls”

This was followed by the The Simpsons bus driver meme that says ‘Don’t make me tap the sign,’ and a sign that says ‘Gargle my balls.’

I have no idea if, in reality, ICE were refused entry onto a bus in Seattle, but I like the message of resistance anyway.

There’s a guy who’s a landscaper, and his brother who does wood floors. The former reached out to me when I first moved up here (no White American landscapers did), and I hired him periodically to mow the lawns. We find other work for him from time to time too. His brother has done a lot of demolition (chimneys) and construction (roofing, deck, roof for the deck, etc.) on our house. We thought he might not get his green card because he’d had a DUI once, but he did. I sent the landscaper a message asking if he, his brother, and their families are OK. He says they are, and ‘Very sad what’s happening.’

I really don’t get the issue. Ok, right, “mexican” nations speak Spanish and work for less. Fuck, well, Donald, welcome to capitalism.

I’ve been an illegal worker in my own chosen country, South Africa, like many of my compatriots (Zimbabwe). I am legal now, but thousands of my compatriots are not. I hire them out of preference, because I know some of what is so fucking tough to leave your home and family.

And I am middle class. It was tough for me, but I had a bunch of advantages that my fellow compatriots did not.

The trouble with fake resistance is that people use it to point out that there isn’t as much to worry about as we thought so we should calm down…which is exactly what the opposition wants.

Venezuelans backed Trump. Now some worry he’ll deport them. Venezuelans in the Miami suburb of Doral have been some of Trump’s biggest proponents. Many feel betrayed after he revoked temporary protected status for thousands.

The decision to cancel temporary protected status (TPS) for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans has ignited fear, confusion and outrage in this Miami suburb, which is affectionately known as “Doralzuela.” Venezuelans here have been some of Trump’s biggest proponents. Even if many could not vote, they attended rallies, decorated their front lawns with Trump flags, and took to social media to support the man they thought would prioritize removing Nicolás Maduro from power. For many Venezuelans, Trump’s decision feels like betrayal.“The Venezuelan community gave President Trump their support,” said John De La Vega, a Venezuelan American immigration lawyer and Army veteran. “This is completely different of what I thought it was going to be.”

Didn’t they hear what he was saying about immigration in the election? And remember Biden was the President who stared Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans–in 2021 and 2023.

I don’t quite understand the deportation process going on. There have been planes sending immigrants “home” (at least to Colombia). So, if that is the process, why are we sending “criminals” to Guantanamo rather than sending them “home”?

Gift link:

Have you listened to any of Trump’s rhetoric on this? He says that other countries are deliberately “emptying their jails” to send criminals to the US. So if he just sends them back, the other countries will just boomerang them back to the US.

So he’s going to keep them, just not on US soil.

I’ll leave the math on how many he can keep in Guantanamo vs. the number of such immigrants he claims exist as an exercise.

The number I’ve seen tossed around about how many could be housed at Gitmo is 30k.

I’m skeptical that many people can be housed there given the staffing requirements and need for building housing and supplying food and other goods to the prison.

Yeah, I didn’t get the memo on the TPS report cover sheets.
Will having a REAL-ID be prima facie evidence to ICE that I am here lawfully?

Same. I’ve just seen Homan or some other flunky mention that number.

That’s about right, albeit at great expense because of the logistics of maintaining detainees in even basic humanitarian conditions. GITMO was never built to keep anywhere that number of prisoners, hence the tent camps which I’m sure will work great once you get so many people desperate to escape that they’ll look for any way to get out.

What about the math on how much this debacle will cost? Is DOGE going to investigate?

What a shit-show.

DOGE only investigates things Trump doesn’t like or payments to contractors who are in competition with Elon Musk’s companies.

“Shit-show” doesn’t begin to describe it; corruption in plain sight to a degree unseen since the collapse of the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact is more like it.

ICE has been known to detain and even deport U.S. citizens. I’d say if you have one, by all means carry it, but there are no guarantees.

Was that ever likely to feature in the planning? Seems to me that those who thought of this would welcome a “Lord of the Flies” solution. (I’m assuming one reason for choosing Guantanamo was that there’d be little or no easy communication in or out).

More and more this calls to mind the TV series Years and Years

Actually I saw that when it was on HBO. It terrified and depressed me. They ought to rerun it now that it’s proving itself out.
