No, but it does dampen my sympathies, a bit. I can afford $7 gas, so I’m kinda hoping MAGA gets what it asked for. I have a little of the same feeling for those 40%
But another question:
It seems that Trump is focusing on blue cities for his crackdown. Makes sense, stick it to the libs and all that. He also doesn’t want to impact farmers, who voted for him. Fun fact: About 50% of agriculture workers are here without authorization.
So: Won’t this cause the immigrants to move away from the non-Trump crackdown cities and into the Trumpy communities where crackdowns aren’t happening? Am I allowed to hope for that schadenfreude?
Well, the high brass met on this issue and issued a district policy. If ICE darkens our doors, we will not let them in. Whoever answers the doorbell, and the probability is 99% that it will be the main office receptionist, always asks the identity and business of said doorbell ringer. In the case of ICE, they will be politely asked to wait while the Principal is summoned. She will go to the door and inform them that she is neither required by law nor personally inclined to allow them entrance. True, they can wait at the end of the street and wait for parents to show up and terrorize both parents and children alike, but they will get no help from us.
ISTM that ICE could just say, ‘So sue me.’ They’ve already got their hostages and shuffled them off to The Land Of Lost In Bureaucratic Paperwork where they’ll never be found.
Well, the door is never opened, so they would have to force an entry. However, entry is, in fact, legally allowed, but the standard is high. ICE agents have to provide their credentials, a reason for entry, and a criminal judicial warrant signed by a federal judge, in accordance with Chicago’s welcoming city ordinance and school board policy. Chicago Public Schools says ICE agents cannot enter a school with “an administrative warrant, ICE detainer, or a document from another agency enforcing civil immigration law."
Unless they ask for a warrant for a specifically named individual, and unless they can show that this individual is strongly suspected of criminal activity, they aren’t going to get a warrant from any judge in Illinois. The red states that have Trump cronies as judges might award such a warrant, but that isn’t going to happen here.
In terms of Donald Trump overall, I certainly do believe it can and is in the process of happening here. In terms of this specific issue, it can’t unless the legal circumstances change, which is something I’m sure Trump will work to change.
I’m glad you have these policies in place but I hope the people at the front door are well-trained. I’ve heard of people being arrested for interfering with ICE agents.
I guess this belongs here. Hard to keep up with all the shit flying…
The Trump administration is freezing hundreds of millions in migrant aid funding, nearly a quarter of which goes to nonprofits and cities in Texas.
…
The funding has been a lifeline to groups that helped shoulder the massive influx of migration over the last several years. Texas received $62.4 million in those grants last year, 23% of the national funding. The largest grants went to Catholic Charities in San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley, as well as El Paso County and the city of San Antonio.
“Without this money, I don’t know if any of us could do this,” Antonio Fernandez, president and CEO of Catholic Charities, said in 2023. The organization helped care for more than 100,000 migrants at San Antonio’s migrant resource center. “If we close that site, we’ll have a lot of people who may be in the streets of San Antonio.”
The funding pause is “quite significant” because much of the federal funding has been delayed, with some organizations still waiting for reimbursements from years past, said Colleen Putzel-Kavanaugh, an analyst at the Migration Policy Institute.
The migrants receiving care from the organizations have all been vetted and released by federal immigration officials, Putzel-Kavanaugh said.
…
My bold.
I guess the only good migrant is a deported migrant.
I can’t let this go without a quote (from the article) by Kristi Noem.
“When somebody said NGO to me, I thought that (was) a nonprofit telling somebody about Jesus or spreading faith and salvation,” Noem said in an interview on Fox News. “Then I realized over the years, it’s been perverted into this shadow government.”
The only other person I can think of who is capable of such an ignorant statement is The Donald himself.
Kristi? That you are a clueless imbecile does not change the fact that NGO’s can not have "been perverted into this shadow government ” because NGOs WERE NEVER only nonprofits telling somebody about Jesus or spreading faith and salvation!
"Spreading Salvation!? Might want to check your Bible about just who spreads Salvation before you commit that heresy again.
Who reminds you to breathe Kristi? You should pay them more.
The governor of WA has sent an email to state workers stating that he will block any attempt to commandeer state resources for immigration enforcement and is asking the legislature to block National Guard units from other states from entering WA.
