The Trump deportation news thread

A New Hampshire man with a green card was detained by immigration officers at Logan Airport and is being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Donald W. Wyatt detention facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island.

Fabian Schmidt’s family said they are unsure of why he is being held. They said he has a recently renewed green card, and no active issues in court.

Schmidt had been visiting Luxembourg and flew back to the U.S. on Friday. His partner had gone to pick him up at Logan Airport, and waited four hours before calling authorities.

“It was just said that his green card was flagged,” said Astrid Senior, his mother. She said she didn’t hear from her son directly until Tuesday, when she learned he’d been hospitalized.

Why do I get the feeling that “his partner” is going to play a very large role in the why here?

I had the same thought. However the man does have a daughter.

I.C.E. agents are under pressure to meet an arrest quota that is far in excess of what their actual arrest rate has been:

ICE is making more arrests, but critics say some claims don’t add up

I.C.E. agents do not have time to single out gays, if that is what “the feeling” mentioned above is about. Senator Reuben Gallego has been talking with I.C.E staff, and here’s the situation:

Some of the ICE agents are very frustrated, because they feel that they’re put on to make an artificial quota. That they first were sent to go after hard-core criminals, and now they’re being pushed to just grab anybody.

“Grab anybody” above is of course an exaggeration. But anyone who isn’t a citizen and was charged with even minor crimes a long time ago – yes. Is this good public policy? Of course not.

You know they’re desperate to make quota when they grab a frikkin lily-white guy named Schmidt.

Another reason

Schmidt had a misdemeanor charge for having marijuana in his car in 2015, which his mother said was dismissed after laws changed in California around marijuana possession. He missed a hearing about the case in 2022 since a notice was never forwarded to his new address. Senior mentioned that Schmidt is successfully recovering from alcoholism, and had a DUI that he’s completely worked through and paid off from around ten years ago.

They are using any criminal offense as a pretext to deport people.

I’ve had more than one friend or colleague comment that they are so glad that they have no plans to travel to the US in the foreseeable future. And these are people who have regularly travelled to the US for simple tourism.

From Wikipedia article on the US-Canada & Mexico Trade War (which is mainly US and Canada):

In February 2025, following Trump’s initial announcement, Canadian travel to the United States dropped by 40 percent compared to February 2024.[106] Polling in March 2025 indicates that many Canadians plan to avoid travelling to the United States for the next year, citing the political tension.[107] Some American tourism groups are worried they will lose Canadian tourist traffic.[108][109] The mayor of Haines, Alaska, which has only one road to the outside world, through Yukon, has expressed his concern that the tariffs will affect the normally friendly relations between Americans and Canadians.[110] One prediction is that the shift in Canadian travel away from the US could amount to a loss of $4 billion for the US economy.[111]

Not John Jacob Jingleheimer, was it?

That would be a coincidence, because that is my name too.

A doctor (kidney specialist) with an H1B visa was deported:

Putting real teeth into laws outlawing the hiring of undocumented workers would be a lot cheaper than rounding them all up. The number of employers is much smaller than the number of employees.

Yeah, but the headlines would be so boring. Not to mention the pictures.

“Goddammit, we said, there ARE MILLIONS of criminal illegals! MILLIONS! That EVERYONE CAN SEE there ARE, just running around all over everywhere being illegal and criminal in broad daylight!!! So you better come up with them! Don’t you dare say there aren’t or we’ll DOGE your ass!”

OTOH the willingness of many members of CBP and ICE to just carry out an instruction they know is based on propaganda, to produce a spectacle that is clearly intended to intimidate by applying maximum severity… to Just Follow Goddamn Orders… is disheartening.

NPR’s Michel Martin interviewed deputy DHS secretary Troy Edgar last week about the arrest and attempted deportation of pro-Palestinian protester Mahmoud Kalil. What’s interesting is this is one of the few times I’ve seen a reporter stick to their guns and call out a Trump lackey (or Trump himself) on their BS. It’s obvious this guy had his talking points going in and just expected them to be swallowed hook line and sinker. Maybe if reporters had been doing this from Day 1 of Trump 45, we wouldn’t be here today.

Funny, isn’t it, that many of our complicated problems have simple solutions. My grandfather never became a citizen, but he was married to a citizen and always was legal. His English was not good, though. I am sure they would deport him today.

One negative result for Trump, however, is that this is being reported and many of those who voted for Trump probably have relatives who are here and undocumented. It is a blatant reversal of what he promised, that only criminals would be prosecuted. I don’t think the American people care or bother to look deeply into it, though. They just see headlines that illegals are being detained and deported, and they think illegal means criminal and that is AOK with them. Undocumented is the more accurate term, but guess which media use that term and which media use illegal?

there is always a well-known solution to every human problem — neat, plausible, and wrong.

  • H.L. Mencken.

I don’t remember if I, or someone else, already mentioned this, but…

A judge ordered deportations to be stopped. The Trump Administration said, ‘No! You’re not the boss of me!’ Of course the Judicial branch of government is the boss of the Executive and Legislative branches; just as the Executive branch is the boss of the Legislative and Judicial branches, and the Legislative branch is the boss of the Executive and Judicial branches. The three branches are co-equal, so that we have checks and balances to each branch’s power. Trump is basically saying, 'I am the dictator. I don’t have to follow your orders.

And now Trump is calling for impeachment of Chief Judge James Boasberg, who issued the orders for Trump to cease deportations.

In other words, not only is Trump insisting he is the ultimate power in the country, he is actively targeting political ‘enemies’ (anyone who disagrees with Him is an enemy) without even trying to justify it.

If you didn’t know, he got rebuked by Chief Justice John Roberts for part of all that:

Roberts allegedly warned that he is willing to “taunt Trump a second time” if need be

If all that John Roberts is willing to do is to “rebuke” the Trump White House, that’s not going to stop them from doing whatever they want.

Yes, the same John Roberts whom Trump thanked for pushing through a pro-Trump decision, telling him, ‘I won’t forget.’

In other words:
