The Truth About Eva Peron?

I got into a conversation about her the other day, and didn’t have any actual data to contribute, so I thought I’d ask.

A woman was complaining that her daughter had been assigned to write a report on an historical figure. The daughter, probably 2nd grade, chose Eva Peron. The teacher said no, she couldn’t do Eva Peron, because she was a prostitute. The mom went down to the school and raised the roof, and her daughter got to report on Eva Peron. (And I don’t blame her. Prostitute sounds like a bizarre description of a woman who was certainly important enough to warrant a school report!)

However, the mom mentioned that her daughter knew about Eva Peron because she was one of the mother’s personal heroes. She went on at length about how much she helped the poor.

Now, I didn’t know enough to interject, but my vague recollection was that she was part of a regime that took Argentina from a European standard of living to a third world one, destroyed the middle class, replaced the rule of law with violent thuggery, and that she, personally, smuggled millions out of the country into Swiss bank accounts. Whatever she did for the poor was a kind of publicity stunt designed to divert attention from the above.

What’s the straight dope on the lady? (And I don’t really care about her sex life!)

One of the few unbiased bios I could find:

I would not be surprised that she used her charms to get trough life. However, how she behaved after gaining power is more important to me. Sadly, she died too young (33!) The more I check about her life, the more I think that she was more used and abused, than she being the schemer.
